Research of Children's Books
1. 1
Splat the Cat
Visual style- Bright colours are used in the story. For example, the aqua green bed
cover and Splat’s red bag. These images are used repetitively throughout the story.
Rob Scotton used modern digital images to show the realistic side. He also used
texture to show the hairy cats and cartoon face expressions to show emotions.
Layout of text and images-The layout on this page is: double page spread and
simple style.
2. 2
The images are black and white. The images are used with patterns, highlights and
shadows. Some of the images show pieces of text with coloured writing or
backgrounds. This is used to show important pieces of information related to cats.
Fonts and text per page-The text is minimal. At the beginning of the story, the
letter I is used in a bigger font than the rest of the text to grab the reader’s attention.
‘I’ is used in aqua green and the rest of the text is in black on white pages.
Text per page started out with four lines and as the story progressed, the text was
reduced to a minimum.
Author, illustrator, publisher- Rob Scotton is the author and illustrator of this
book. It is published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, USA.
Number of pages and page size- Thirty-two pages are used and the page size is
26cm square (26 cm2).
3. 3
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Visual style- Illustrations are busy. They look like strong water colours. Five or six
colours are used per illustration. The images are hand drawn; for example, rays or
sunbeams.
They are not too realistic but easy to see what they depict. Images get bigger, so when
‘he’ becomes a butterfly it’s a double page spread, like butterfly wings.
Layout of text and images - The layout of the book has strong horizontal
images (reminds you of caterpillar shape). There are strong suggestions of texture.
Pages show fruit with holes to suggest caterpillar has eaten through.
4. 4
Fonts and text per page- I would assume that the font size is twelve. I have
observed the text is a little bold and serif. It is written quite formally. ‘g’ is not as a
child would write a ‘g’.
The text is minimal. Perhaps one idea per page, suggests the images are more
important.
Author, illustrator, publisher- Eric Carle is the author and illustrator of this
book. It is published by Penguin/Puffin group, USA. The Very Hungry Caterpillar
was written for younger children based on simple vocabulary.
Number of pages and page size- There are twenty-six pages in this book. I
would describe the page as rectangular and bendy paper. The page size is 3.7×18.1cm.
5. 5
The Sand Dolphin
Visual style - Bright colours are used strongly in the book. The beach scenery and
the visual picture of the child sleeping give you a calming effect.
Tint and shades can be used to lighten and darken the image to convey the mood. The
sand dolphin could have been hand drawn to help show the relationship between the
child and the dolphin.
Double page spread is also used to make the image stand out with little attention to
the text.
Layout of text and images - Vibrant and colourful images give the reader an
excited feeling. The waves and moonlit sky are glittery to help convey a dreamlike
effect, so you would be unable to tell whether it’s realistic or not. Text is long to make
the images stand out and to make the story more interesting.
6. 6
Fonts and text per page - The font size is fourteen. Mary is written in all caps to
show that the dolphin is hers. This shows ownership.
The text is structured in sentence format, to describe the dolphin’s features and
Mary’s relationship with the dolphin. Ten lines max are used per page.
Author, illustrator, publisher - Christine Butterworth is the author of this
book. Sue Broadley is the illustrator. The Sand Dolphin is published by Hodder and
Stoughton Children’s Books, UK.
Number of pages and page size - There are thirty-two pages in the story. The
book is rectangular shaped and hard cover. The page size is 24.4×20.3cm.
