Accountability can be taught and learned. Improving on my accountability is easier than I think. It all starts with the mindset. The Five Keys are No Fault Guilt or Blame, 100/0 Mindset, Self-empowerment, Result vs. Task and Clear Agreements
The New Accountability provides an accountability that works today.
Was this person focused on a result or a task? What do they think their job is? What is their mindset?
People can do more when agreements are clearly negotiated, monitored and fulfilled. Customers appreciate knowing they can count on service providers to do what they say they will do. Rework, redundancy and “babysitting” are reduced when employees at all levels of the organization understand the concepts of responsibility, self-empowerment and accountability Improved working relationships and smoother functioning processes make each individual’s work dramatically more rewarding. Your brand and image are enhanced when everyone in the organization adopts the mindset and skills associated with 100% accountability.
New definitions set the stage for a better accountability that can be implemented each day. Used to replace FGB language. Empowerment is key with the knowledge that employees must self empower once the conditions are put in place by leadership.
There are times when people are clearly at fault. We encourage the use of the term accountable, avoiding fault guilt and blame as they carry heavy negative connotations. Guilt and blame lead to finger pointing and the avoidance of accountability.
To be less than 100% accountable in mindset leaves accountability on the table that we are not leveraging. We all have accountability available to us. In most organizations the lower you go from the top the more accountability that is available. This does not assume that leaders are automatically leveraging all of their accountability. There is much for leaders to learn and change about their own accountability and how they lead accountability in their organizations.
When managers master delegating results and outcomes the workplace changes significantly. They manage less. Employees self empower at a much greater rate. Problems get identified and solved closer to the issue and faster. People become solution finders not just problem identifiers.
