He presented the firm’s latest work including a major expansion to the Red Deer College Building Communities for Learning Project, The Triffo Hall Centre for Advanced Studies at the University of Alberta and the Lemur Pavilion at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. The lecture was dedicated to his late mentor Arthur Erickson.

The world is becoming increasingly more diverse in our nation’s classrooms. One critical aspect of respecting diversity as well as using it as a means to strengthen students’ educational experiences and academic outcomes is how the issue of diversity plays out in American teacher education programs in literacy and reading. International Reading Association’s (IRA) Committee on Learning Diversity has undertaken a national study to examine this issue.

n this session, participants will discuss the importance of partnerships and articulation among various Chinese teaching institutions, using as a model a successful partnership between a Confucius Institute and a community-based heritage language school. This collaboration benefits both institutions in promoting Chinese language and culture locally, offering professional development to teachers, and increasing students’ motivation to learn Chinese. Then participants will focus on partnerships between K–12 public schools and community-based heritage language schools, which can create a short-term solution to teacher shortage issues in the former by recruiting teachers from the latter. They can also provide a long-term opportunity for K–12 public schools to experience Chinese culture via the heritage schools’ cultural activities.
