1. Schools and Parents Working Together for
Positive Results
How can schools establish better partnerships
with parents that will ensure ongoing outcomes
for their children?
3. Key Dimensions of Family-School Partnerships
The Family-School Partnerships Framework presented by The Family-Schools and
Community Partnerships Bureau identifies seven dimensions as guidelines for planning
partnership activities as follows:
communicating;
connecting learning at home and at
school;
building community and identity;
recognising the role of the family;
consultative decision-making;
collaborating beyond the school;
and participating.
4. IDEAS FOR SCHOOLS
“School partnerships are about focusing on the child– they are about considering the
needs of both the school and the family in creating the best environment for the child.
They aren’t about schools taking responsibility from parents.” --Raising Children Network
5. IDEAS FOR TEACHERS
“As teachers work to involve parents and community members, their relationships with children also
tend to improve. With more time for each child, increased understanding, and a more exciting
curriculum, children respond more positively to teachers.” M.L. Henniger

Studies and research have concluded that strong leadership,
effective communication, practical strategies, followed by a
commitment to reach set goals are key contributors to a
successful school-family partnership.
One case study found that similar stages for building parent
partnerships emerged in schools with successful school-family
partnerships. They all:
had a vision for the school;
•shared and developed that vision;
devised a school plan with parents, staff and students;
established structures and protocols;
collaborated to build relationships;
established and maintained a joint parent partnership;
and addressed the challenges.
