Started March with target of 1,000 FB fans - now hoping for 3,000 in 2011. 200 followers on Twitter and looking to growFacebook has been a crucial tool as it has helped us develop important contacts in addition to spreading awareness - current project coordinator Empower Malawi - Jones Ntaukira - contacted us via Facebook. Our volunteer in Zimbabwe - Lewis Bhebhe - contacted us through our website. Launched a blog in late 2010 which charts our progress in more intimate detail and will have guest contributors on topics related to our mission and values. Also have a forum space which we are testing out internally to promote debate on topics that are relevant to social entrepreneurship, development and social enterprise. For fundraising - used Everyday Heroes as an online fundraising platform, particularly for the SMH Half Marathon and City2Surf, we raised just under 10,000 from these two events alone and about 70-80% of these funds were processed online. We mainly promoted these events via direct email and Facebook. We have definitely increased our awareness towards events etc. Facebook is a main channel yet again as we setup invites for the network we've built over the last year. So we've attracted people to attend events, volunteers and participants in fun runs through facebook. In addition we've also got global help in terms of spreading the word across social networks to boost awareness and potential for contacts overseas.
Blogs, facebook & twitter. * Newsletter which now has 9,500 subscribers Have sign up forms at every event and make sure this is an integral part of our website. This connects everything back together :) Most important advice is about building their community and online presence by sharing and getting involved with other people online - If they want their info/products or a name for themselves the best way to start is to engage with others. It all can be done for free before any money is invested into fancy websites or advertising and is far more effective!Facebook has been the most successful social media for us and makes up a staggering 5,000 referrals a month direct to our website. I can not stress how important it is to build a facebook Page (make sure it is not a personal page or Group) and why this is going where the people are already. With Facebook now overtaking google with website traffic it just shows you how this has become a crucial part of everyone's day!Our blog has been building slowly over time and I have learnt that this is an effective way to engage with people in between our events. We started with 2 posts a week and have now worked our way up to daily blog posts (Monday - Friday) and this has helped sustain our website traffic and has helped us gain advertisers on our website to help pay for the running costs and generate some extra income for FK office costs.
Determine how often you want to blog or share via social media. If you are sporadic with your posts or updates people will most likely loose interest. At very least you should be trying to engage with your audience twice a week. I would recommend starting at something like 2‐3 posts a week – and never all on the same day, try and space them apart and then working your way up to daily. This builds consistency with readers, and keeps content up to date.
*facebook page, twitter account and linked in group but haven’t done anything strategic to date to build these and could be using them a lot more effectively. What we want to do is to use the platforms to inspire discussion and have them disseminate useful information but we just haven’t got the resources to do this yet.
Sarah - The best way for you to build your customer base and online reputation is to share, connect and support those back in the same community
