2. ACTION ADVENTURE
• In this unit you will learn to: KEY CONCEPTS FOR
• Write a textual analysis of a TEXTUAL ANALYSIS
film extract
• Writing a textual analysis
means you will: GENRE
• Accurately describe different MEDIA LANGUAGE
aspects of a film extract
REPRESENTATION
• Explain why the people who
made the extract chose each (IDEOLOGY & VALUES)
of those aspects
• Explain what the extract says
about the world
3. WHAT IS TEXTUAL ANALYSIS?
• Describing this image
would be to say things
like:
• This is a picture of Spider-
Man
• He is sitting high up on
the ledge of a building
• He is wearing a red suit
DENOTATION ISN’T GOOD
ENOUGH!
4. WHAT IS TEXTUAL ANALYSIS?
• Good analysis follows the
PEAT model:
• POINT: you make a point
about the text
• EXAMPLE: you give an
example from the extract
• ANALYSIS: you explain the
example
• TERMINOLOGY: you use
Media Studies technical
terms if you can
5. WHAT IS TEXTUAL ANALYSIS?
• In the poster you can see
Spiderman crouching high up
on the ledge of a building. You
can also see his reflection
wearing a black costume
• The image implies that he has
two sides to him, a good side a
bad side. The buildings in the
background are slanted
suggesting the use of a canted
camera angle, this could
connote that Spiderman isn’t
himself and not thinking
logically.

10MINSWhole class discussion and brainstorm – What is an action adventure film? The pupils should be encouraged to respond to this whole class activity. The prompts of film titles can be given. All sorts of responses from narrative details to the names of typical action adventure actors should be included.
15minsProvide a large list of films from several genres and ask pupils to categorise them under the question “Is it an action adventure film?” Yes/No/Don’t know the film. The pupils can work in pairs/small groups to do this. The discussion which arises from this activity is perhaps more valuable than the actual activity itself. Pupils should be encouraged to discuss why they would include one film and exclude another.
5-10minsStudents to look at sheet (NICS002) and write down in the chart which things they think are conventional to the action adventure genre – groups/ pairs Feedback
Move on to sub genre flipchart and…Discuss the sub-genres of action adventure films eg, buddy, team, superhero etc… in addition to the issues posed by cross-genre films eg, `Romancing The Stone’ is rom/com and action adventure. Look at this whole class. What have been the issues?PLENARY – SPEC IDEA5 minutes Pupils should plan a presentation in small groups to show their understanding of the conventions of the action adventure genre.15 minutes Pupils deliver the presentations which allows the teacher to assess if the learning objectives have been met
