Editor's Notes
So, you may not want to be the person taking this photo, from the back of a car fleeing a riot at the Wall in the West Bank, but I guarantee you will impress your friends with your war stories and there is nothing like watching the news as it happens.
So, here's one woman who agrees with me, Nelly Bly a badass chick who went around the world in 72 days at the beginning of the 20th century, when she was also in her early 20's and reported on everything. I also loved that she used her impatience to make things happen. Who impresses you? -I really like this...maybe expand a little or change the "who impresses you" and add or incorporate "who inspires you" "who is doing what you want to be doing? follow them, learn about them".
Sabeel, a Palestinian Christian peace organization ended up giving me a scholarship. I really resonate with the patron founders, Desmond Tutu and Naim Ateek, so even though I didn't know anything about Palestine when I applied for the scholarship, I knew I wanted to learn more from them. Plus, they gave me $2,000. -maybe you already have this in your script, but maybe a word about why you even ended up applying, I guess it was because you were interested in what these people had to teach, so you already said that, awesome. Maybe Nelly Bly led you to be interested in pursuing writing abroad. Just a one sentence thing to connect your first two slides to this...
So, for me, pursuing this dream was absolutely terrifying. I had no idea what I was doing, but they gave me money, so I bought my plane ticket and for some reason I decided to pack a tent. -do you mention your dream earlier? what is your dream? allow that to thread through as something that led you to take steps towards doing these things. You really only have to mention it once, and maybe you already have in your script.
Before I knew it I was on a plane to Tel Aviv. So, sometimes, going for what you want can be far more simple than you make it out to be. A Time Magazine journalist was sitting behind me, who told me the Jerusalem bureau had closed and they really needed reporters. He gave me his card and as I landed I had this thought
it just hit me that I was getting intentionally getting involved in a global conflict. You may have this feeling several times, particularly when trying to do something pretty risky in a foreign country, which is why it's important to
Plus, people will try to stop you, but it's not all war and conflict. I couchsurfed, got a job at a restaurant and volunteered to understand more about the culture. Of course, I was accused of being a spy or just ousted in most of these scenarios. --people will try to stop you. you mention this later in a context that makes a little more sense, maybe you don't need that here, just focus on making friends and getting involved.
So, when you are connected to the community you get a better perspective, that's because when you are no longer at a distance, emotionally or physically you become the story. You go from looking at the wall on a diagram to getting down to ground level. --great slide, great text, great point.
As you get closer to the story, it's really important to keep an open, childlike mind and listen. This little girl is the daughter of Mrs. Um, a woman who had her house and tent demolished, and became an icon for her community. -had her house and tent demolished where? why? these little details help us connect, if you have time, also, most people do not know as much as you do about this.
As you listen, you will start to see another side the news doesn't show. A side of joy... and this is one woman who didn't accuse me of being a spy! --what is the side of joy? be specific. what does that mean? do you mean that despite struggles and hardships your sources can show you their side of life where they maintain joy, family connections, purpose?
As I heard more stories and connected with more people, I event ---your text here seems unfinished
Speaking of the unexpected, when Many will try to tell you that what you are doing is dangerous. What I learned, after the local army hauled our bus driver away during a fact finding mission to a closed section of the West Bank, is that these situations are a goldmine. When people try to stop you, you know you're on the right track. --how was this a goldmine, what did you gain from this experience? a story? sources? a lead for another story? photos you could use later?
So, I eventually landed a position with the Palestine Monitor, which led me to meet Juliano Mer Khamis. While his was the last interview I conducted, as he contacted the head of my organization to tell him I was certainly a Jewish spy after our interview, I learned something invaluable from him -so it looks like you are still deciding which of these slides to use for Mer Khamis as you have three of them. I like the second slide, or maybe the second and third slide since that shows that he died and it says what you learned from him...

Your voice counts. We have a responsibility to practice our rights and speak up, whether it be on behalf of others or just voicing our own opinions at places like Ignite!
While I was a correspondent, I was kicked out of every house and job I ever had, eventually living with two Arab men in a single room at Hebrew University. I was held at gunpoint repeatedly, and lost my health, money and friends in the process. --since this is now coming in the middle of the slide show, versus the beginning, I would maybe change the "So you want to be a Foreign correspondent" to something more transitional, like "are you interested in doing what I did?" or How to become a foreign correspondent or something. Not a huge deal, just felt a little bumpy because this slide looks/sounds more like a beginning than a middle.
Once you've established that this is definitely something you want to do, here are some steps to take to get started. I did all of the above, and eventually landed a scholarship to go to Jerusalem.
You've heard my story, but don't be afraid to get out and tell yours. Using social media is a great way to get your voice heard. Plus, how are you going to impress your friends until you have byline? -who is this quote from?
If you trust me... That is quite a statement and why are you giving that ultimatum. Why should they trust you? They don't know you. And, they don't need to trust you to connect with you. Maybe just say, connect with me to learn more... or just connect with me I'd like to tell you my story about being a foreign corresponden t in the Wb in 2011- I'm going to tell you my story about
