This presentation was given at the First Philosophy and Web conference in 2010. After describing the issues in the Social Networking space, the presentation moves from a presentation of Web Architecture and it's relation to Philosophy to show how the current problems are philsophical as well as technical and to point out that the way out has been available for all to see. Discussions on this can now take place on the W3C PhiloWeb Community Groups: http://www.w3.org/community/philoweb/

  • The recent extensive Wikileaks debate has brought to the forefront of the worlds attention the issues of privacy and transparency. While Assange won the Times readers choice award [0], Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder, won the Person of the year award [1] But both of their creations, Facebook and Wikileaks have a very similar issue. To start with Wikileaks: consider that while it could be used for good and for exposing corruption, it could just as well be used as a platform to collect and sell secrets, exposing a few of those in the media to give it a good image and thereby hide its more shady operations. The same is true of Facebook: our image is of Facebook as a nice and friendly place where we connect socially, but the business model on which it relies requires it to aggregate that information in order to sell it. It could itself be thought of as a huge spy operation. This is what I explore in this talk in a lot more detail.

For an overview of the issues raised by Wikileaks see 'CableGate, Release Acts and the Pharmakon'

  • I updated the slides, which have a lot more hyperlinks in them now. But updating the slides did not lead to the notes also getting updated...
