PRELIMS PROJECT
General Objective:
 To experience engineering design process, aesthetic and ergonomic considerations and to work effectively
in a team. To practice self discipline in meeting the dead line and creativity in solving problems.
Specific Objective:
 To design a model of hydraulically actuated manipulator that can transfer a vertical cylinder from one
location to another.
Design Brief:
A highly sensitive material is to be transferred from position A to position B. Due to the sensitivity of the
task, a special machine is required to replace any human involvement. Your team is commissioned to
design and fabricate a machine that can accomplish the given task. The figure below shows the dimensions
of the cylinder with respect with the base of the machine.
Design Specifications:
 The maximum size of the base is 6 .
 Use appropriate size of plastic syringe with hose.
 Machine controlled by one operator ONLY.
 All materials are aluminium.
Requirements:
1. Soft copy: 3 minute maximum video presentation showing design process, from (a) project
conceptualization, (b) drawing/sketching, (c) material selection and purchasing, (d) fabrication,
(e)assembly and (f) initial testing, (g) final product.
2. Soft copy: Paper Design showing (a) project description, (b) machine part drawing, (c) kinematic analysis,
(d) Controller function and (e) Actual project cost
Items 1 and 2 shall be submitted at least three (3) days in advance and attached to NO
PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED DURING PROJECT PRESENTATION WITHOUT THESE INITIAL REQUIREMENTS.
3. Actual working project
Project Presentation:
Your group will be allotted a maximum of 3-minute presentation of your project. The leader will discuss the
unique features of your machine including the step by step procedure on how to control the machine. This

tested and adjusted multiple times before the project presentation).
During Testing:
The base of the project will be placed on the top of the table. Aadaptor and Badaptor will be arranged in
accordance with the dimensions shown in the figure.
Only one group member will be selected randomly and will be assigned to operate the machine, picking
Aadaptor and inserting to stationary Badaptor, and vice versa.
Maximum of five (5) minutes will be allotted for the entire sequence. NO SECOND TRIAL WILL BE
ALLOWED.
Grading System:
Functionality (Actual project): 60%
*No grades will be given for projects that are not functioning.
Kinematic Analysis, Calculation (Paper Design) and video editing: 30%
*No project will be accepted without paper design and video presentation
Aesthetics and Ergonomics: 10%

Paper size: Short bond paper
Font: Cambria
Size: 12

Contents:
I. Project Description
 This section contains a brief introduction about the project, its function and general
specifications. (Minimum of 1 page)
II. Machine Part Drawing
 This section contains the specific name of each machine part and complete scaled drawing
with dimension of each, similar to the figure shown below.

 This section also shows the actual picture of the assembly drawing of the machine.
III. Kinematic Analysis
 Kinematic diagram
 Displacement analysis and work space analysis
 Mobility analysis
IV. Controller Function
 This section contains the detailed step by step procedure in controlling the mechanism.
V. Project Costing
NOTES:
All group members should be present during project presentation. The schedule for group presentation
will be posted. NO LATE PROJECT will be accepted

  • 1. PRELIMS PROJECT General Objective:  To experience engineering design process, aesthetic and ergonomic considerations and to work effectively in a team. To practice self discipline in meeting the dead line and creativity in solving problems. Specific Objective:  To design a model of hydraulically actuated manipulator that can transfer a vertical cylinder from one location to another. Design Brief: A highly sensitive material is to be transferred from position A to position B. Due to the sensitivity of the task, a special machine is required to replace any human involvement. Your team is commissioned to design and fabricate a machine that can accomplish the given task. The figure below shows the dimensions of the cylinder with respect with the base of the machine. Design Specifications:  The maximum size of the base is 6 .  Use appropriate size of plastic syringe with hose.  Machine controlled by one operator ONLY.  All materials are aluminium. Requirements: 1. Soft copy: 3 minute maximum video presentation showing design process, from (a) project conceptualization, (b) drawing/sketching, (c) material selection and purchasing, (d) fabrication, (e)assembly and (f) initial testing, (g) final product. 2. Soft copy: Paper Design showing (a) project description, (b) machine part drawing, (c) kinematic analysis, (d) Controller function and (e) Actual project cost Items 1 and 2 shall be submitted at least three (3) days in advance and attached to NO PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED DURING PROJECT PRESENTATION WITHOUT THESE INITIAL REQUIREMENTS. 3.   • 2. Project Presentation: Your group will be allotted a maximum of 3-minute presentation of your project. The leader will discuss the unique features of your machine including the step by step procedure on how to control the machine. This Your project should have been tested and adjusted multiple times before the project presentation). During Testing: The base of the project will be placed on the top of the table. Aadaptor and Badaptor will be arranged in accordance with the dimensions shown in the figure. Only one group member will be selected randomly and will be assigned to operate the machine, picking Aadaptor and inserting to stationary Badaptor, and vice versa. Maximum of five (5) minutes will be allotted for the entire sequence. NO SECOND TRIAL WILL BE ALLOWED. Grading System: Functionality (Actual project): 60% *No grades will be given for projects that are not functioning. Kinematic Analysis, Calculation (Paper Design) and video editing: 30% *No project will be accepted without paper design and video presentation Aesthetics and Ergonomics: 10% Paper Design Format: Paper size: Short bond paper Font: Cambria Size: 12 Line spacing: Double Contents: I. Project Description  This section contains a brief introduction about the project, its function and general specifications. (Minimum of 1 page) II. Machine Part Drawing  This section contains the specific name of each machine part and complete scaled drawing with dimension of each, similar to the figure shown below.

Kinematic Analysis  Kinematic diagram  Displacement analysis and work space analysis  Mobility analysis IV. Controller Function  This section contains the detailed step by step procedure in controlling the mechanism. V. Project Costing NOTES: All group members should be present during project presentation. The schedule for group presentation will be posted. NO LATE PROJECT will be accepted
