JOVIMIN: Micronutrient Supplement for Small Ruminant
1. TO GOD BE THE GLORY...
Thanks be to GOD, who gives us
the victory through our Lord Jesus
Christ. 1 Cor. 15:57.
2. "JOVIMIN :Micronutrient
Supplement for Small
Ruminant"
Paper presented during the National Technology Forum

3. Rationale
•Pressing need on animal
agriculture arises from the need to
increase meat production for the
growing population
• As the need for food become
acute, man and animals would
compete for feed grains
• Livestock would have to depend
more on products that the humans
can not eat such as crop residues.
• In order to meet this goal, the
development of the goat industry
and alternative technology options
should be pursued
• The overall challenge is to
increase the overall
production of protein foods
from animals
4. Why raise goats?
•Raising goats is an important
component of the country’s
agricultural system
• Security asset providing
emergency cash in times
of flooded and drought
affected crops due to
climate change• Requires less investment cost
& local feed resources
• Considered as the “mobile
bank” (ATM : animal to money
for smallhold farmers
• Potential source of sustained
income to rural enterprises
5. Why raise goats?
•It is considered rural growth booster
• Sustainable goat enterprise
deserves a top priority to intensify
and build up farmers’ living asset
• Innovative Goat Production System is a holistic
approach to ensure sustainable livelihood enterprises
to small hold farm families
6. As of 1 January 2019, the top three regions in terms of inventory were
Central Visayas, Western Visayas and Ilocos Region, These regions
contributed 39.70 percent to the country’s total goat inventory
Distribution of Goat Inventory by Region, as of Jan. 1, 2019

(Upgrading and Controlled Breeding)
•Genetic improvement of stocks
through cross-breeding with

•Upgrading of selected native
thru buck loan

11. •Produce stocks with improved
growth rate , body size, and
milk yield, thus increasing
productivity and consequently
profitability of the enterprise

12. Goats are raised under complete or
semi-confinement with elevated slatted
floors and made from locally available
materials such as bamboo animals are
protected from exposure to adverse
Environmental condition to lessen
mortality/morbidity and reduce access
to the infective stage of the parasites
Improved Housing and Stall Feeding
13. Feeding Management
•Optimizes use of locally available feed materials while
meeting the nutritional requirements of the animals
• Feeding strategy using cheap, locally available feed
materials and a combination of appropriate feeding
technologies

14. Animal Health Management
•Reduced dependence on chemical anthelmintics
•Application of an effective dewormer that will practically
eliminate worms of the animal
• careful planning in the
use of chemical
dewormers to animals
• animals are dewormed
twice a year-first before
the onset of the rainy
season and the next
during the peak rainy
months.

16. Outcomes on the low utilization of urea molasses mineral block
EVALUATION
PROCESS/CRITERIA
RESULTS/OUTCOME/IMPACT
Feed backing and testimonies of
farmers during meetings/site visit
Fourteen years of observation was noted that
despite the nutritional advantages of using UMMB/
UTRS, the farmers response registered a very low
adoption, hence the opportunity to develop and
innovate new product
Regular monitoring and farm
visit/farmer to farmer exchange of
experiences
The use of UMMB technology prohibits the use of
the product to weanlings and pregnant does and
might pose urea toxicity when consumed by
animals in higher amount. Moreover, the use of
urea and cement as binder is costly
Develop an innovative natural
micro nutrient balls for goats good
for all ages
Finally, the trademark “JOVIMIN” was issued a
certificate of Registration by the Bureau of
Trademarks and released to DA BAR 08 Sept. 2016
17. WHY DEVELOP JOVIMIN BALLS?
Poor quality roughages, e.g. cereal straws, poor quality hay, or
dry-season forage that contains a lot of stem but not much leaf,
can be deficient in crude protein (N).
Insufficient N in the diet means that rumen microorganisms
cannot make enough microbial protein for the maintenance or
growth of ruminants.
This can become critical, resulting in loss of condition and
increased disease risk.
A reality of climate change affecting the growth of crops,
forages for livestock requires an additional micro nutrient
supplementation

Unique Features of Ruminants
24. Unique Features of GIT Tract of Ruminants
• The microbes synthesize nutrients for their host,
in a true type of symbiotic relationship
• They synthesize or manufacture all the B-
complex vitamins and all the essential amino
acids
• Finally, the beneficial microorganism give their
life to their host in payment for food and shelter
being digested further along in the
gastrointestinal tract.
25. • MORE SPACE – 9X the digestive tract
capacity of a man
• The GI tract is ¼ of the live weight of the
animal
• More microorganisms – rumen bacteria
range from 25-50 B/ml and protozoa 200 T-
500T/ml.
26. • They make it possible for ruminants to utilize
roughages and digest the fiber.
• They produce the volatile fatty acids, (butyric,
acetic and propionic) and provide 60-80% of the
energy needs.

31. • Goats have an ability to thrive in harsh
environments.
• There high digestive ability enables them to
deal with high cellulose/high fiber diets of a
very coarse nature.
• Goat is an intelligent animal and usually
manages on free range to eat herbs, weeds
and other deep rooted plant material which
has relatively high mineral content.
Importance of Mineral Nutrient for Goats
32. • A goat is at least 50% more productive and
efficient for its body weight, means that if a
goat is giving its own body weight in milk every
10 days or less, it is therefore utilising vast of
vitamins and minerals.
• A goat also needs more minerals and vitamins
for maintenance too: with its relatively large
digestive system in relation to its body size, the
work of digestion involves the use and loss of
large quantities of minerals.
33. • Calcium and Phosphorous considered a
high levels minerals, interactive with Vitamin
D as well as iron and copper,99% is stored in
the skeleton and 1% is used vitally in
enzymatic processes, cell transport & blood
clotting
• Normally a positive calcium balance during
pregnancy when the skeleton is added to
and after kidding where up to 30% of the
skeleton may be utilized
34. • Magnesium is found 70% in the bones
and teeth, the rest in the blood
• Zinc also found in skin, hair and enzymes.
Supplementing with Zn is a real benefit
especially to suckling goats
• Cobalt directly involved in the formation
of Vitamin B12
35. • Goats with deficiency in copper can
be seen with the appearance of
“swayback” actually does sway and
the goat has difficulty walking
• Iron is a component of blood
hemoglobin contains 75% of the
body,fundamental to all living tissue

59. TESTIMONY
John Cadabuna, Echague Isabela
“The result is very satisfactory and convincing that JOVIMIN is very
effective in increasing the weights of our herds”
“…they are more resistant to parasites and diseases including the
weather condition”
“I am 100% confident that JOVIMIN MINERAL BALLS will help a lot of farmers
in improving the health of our animals especially goats, cows and carabaos
(ruminant) and others who will partake JOVIMIN mineral balls.”
I strongly support and promote JOVIMIN MINERAL BALLS to my colleagues in
the goat production industry and willing to speak to tell them the
advantages and benefits we can get in using it to our goats and other
animals as well.”
Hindi ako mapapahiya sa produktong ito.
60. Using JOVIMIN MINERAL BALLS for goats is very
effective to increase their weights and strengthen their
resistance to parasites and diseases including
resilient weather condition
Likewise their coats are very shining and they are
more aggressive/active in roaming around their
playground.
The good news they are all pregnant now.
Expected delivery will be in August 2019
