Editor's Notes
The Life Center of Hernando
Equipping individuals with skills, knowledge and confidence to maximize their potential for overall well-being and growth.
Here is where TLC is able to provide a sense of belonging through family-style living . Because these young moms are often lacking the personal and parenting skills to be self-sufficient as a young family, TLC provides the necessary resources to guide these young moms towards independence.
Poverty is a cycle. TLC truly believes that given the right opportunity and assistance, people can become independent , community members.
Residents come into TLC needing a lot of help – sorting health coverage for their child or children and navigating social services is a big part of how we assist TLC We have on average 2 classes a week – that’s about 80 classes.
Opened in March 2013, The Little House is a 3-bedroom home located in south Brooksville. We currently have 2 residence and are interviewing to fill the 3rd room. Since we opened in March 2013, and at various stages – we’ve had 5 moms, 8 children, 2 births and 2 residents who evolved out on their own. One came into TLC pregnant, put her life back together, had her baby and is now attending UFS full-time, living on campus with her baby.
From day 1, TLC has reached out and connected with other non-profits and youth oriented organizations: attended HYI Youth Summit for past 4 years, accept and make referrals with Dawn Center and attended the Health Dept’s annual Giant Baby Shower Event to name just a few.
The Early Learning Center is scheduled to open in mid 2014. Teachers are currently being enrolled in classes to meet state licensing requirements, but the LC is full of educational toys and materials – thanks to the generosity of our friends and supporters.
The Life Center could not offer the services we do without help from the Hernando Community. Benefactors include Carefest – who prepped the Learning Center for opening, Lowes – who donated a beautiful chain-link fence around the LC to help meet safety standards, Keller-Williams that donated gifts and gift cards to TLC Residents and needy neighbors, and Chicks in the Wind, motorcycle org that raised money for TLC in September and road up with Santa for Christmas bringing tons of toys and fun for residents and neighbor’s children.
The Life Center would not be in business were it not for the dedication of our volunteers. We are blessed to have a dedicated group of community members that month after month show up for TLC either as Board members, teachers, mentors, counselors, drivers, babysitters – there is no aspect of our residents’ lives that are not positively impacted by volunteerism.
TLC firmly believes that breaking the chains of entitlement and dependence on social systems will improve the lives of the families coming through TLC but the community as well.
There are various ways to help TLC: Monetary Contributions, In-Kind donations like baby clothes & diapers, offering your service, mentoring a resident, babysitting during classes so moms can focus on the materials. Any money donated goes to insurance, supplies, upkeep and repairs.
