OBJECTIVES AND STRUCTURE:
The first year in our BAis common to all
majors and provides the student with a
first approach to audiovisual creation in all
areas: elements of film language, screen-
play writing, camera handling, use of
lighting equipment, editing and sound
software, the role of every member of a
film crew and the preparation and
shooting methodology for a film.
Upon finishing the course, the student will
be able to perform autonomously in
screenplay creation, direction, photogra-
phy, camera, sound, editing and
finishing of audiovisual products in HD.
The course has theory, practical exerci-
ses led by specialised teachers, exercise
proposals and free choice exercises.

B.A IN CINEMATOGRAPHY
1.- History of Cinema
• The main film genres: Comedy, Drama, Film Noir, Musical, Fantasy, Adventu-
re, Documental, Western. Features and essential elements of each.
• History of Cinema. I. The Early Period 1895-1935. Griffith and the creation of
the film language. The Great Scandinavian cinema. Chaplin and Slapstick.
German Expressionism. France, first vanguard.
2.- Language and Aesthetics I. Framing, Composition and camera move-
ments.
• Film Language: What is it? Essential parts and terminology.
• Film Language: Ethics and Aesthetics of the shot. The frames. Scales. Angles.
The composition. Relations and progressions.
• Film Language: The camera movements. The kinetic and its transformations.
The successivity against concurrency. Editing inside the shot. The concept of
delayed apprehension.
3. Language and Aesthetics II. Light, Shadow and Color.
• Film Language: Plastic Language of Light. Foundations and features.
Different types of light. Expressive properties. Light and dark. Shadows. The
scary.
• Color. Dominance. Chromodynamics. Illusory nature of color. The visible
spectrum. Primary, secondary and tertiary. Chromatic qualities: the warm and
cold. Dominance and color schemes.
4.- Fundamentals concepts of Film Photography.
• Photography Technology. Fundamental concepts. Particles and waves. The
human eye and perception of light. Colorimetry. Light sources. ColorTemperatu-
re. Emulsions. Filters. The different spotlights. Photometry. Grading.
• HD Video Camera I. Essential operations. Formats. Menus. Optics.
• Electricity and Electrical equipment I. Handling electric materials. Spotlights.

• The Director of Photography I. The job of the director of photography and
camera operator. Scraps of light. Shadow values. Bounce light. Internal and

5.- Language and Aesthetics III. The Props.
• Film language: The Props. Mode and functions. Presences and absences.
• Construction of characters and situations through the props. Practical work-
shop.

• Screenplay: Ideas and basic concepts. Theories and developments. Topics.
Defining the frame. Frame structures.
• Screenplay: Practical workshops.
7.- Applied Computing. Editing I.
• Editing Technology: Essential Ideas. The editor’s trade. Classifying and filing.
Synchronization. Video signals. Basics and minimum requirements to start
editing.
• Editing programs: Adobe Premiere I. Premiere Interface. Capture and organi-
zation of film material. The timeline. Three-point editing. Clips, codecs, transi-
tions, filters and titles. Working with audio. Export.
• DVD: iDVD and Toast Titanium. Types DVD. Toast Titanium. System needs.
Basic steps to create a DVD. Interface. Map: navigate into the project. Templates.
Drop zones. Slideshows. Burn DVD.
8.-Sound Fundamentals I.
• Audio Technology I: Direct Sound I. The work of the sound designer.
Knowledge of materials. The different types of microphones. Technical possibili-
ties. Recording media. Environments, Dialogues and Wildtracks.
9.- Film Production I.
• The basics of film production. Organizing chaos. Functions and methodolo-
gy of the production team. The breakdown. Locations. Teams. Transport. Adap-
ting the production plan to the shooting schedule.
• From the idea to the screen: The birth, growth and end of the film.
10.- Professional Ethics and Creative Development.
• Terminology and basic notions of cinematography.
• Let's shoot! Introduction to the film trade and attendance in a professional
shooting.
• The Director’s job I. Preparing the film. Locations. Castings. Work with the
assistant and script. Working with team leaders. Working with actors. Shooting.
Sticking to a plan. Availability. The time organization.
11.- Projects I.
• Planning a sequence and a technical script. Shooting plan, production plan
and casting. Rehearsals. The protocol of filming a shot: the clapperboard. The
role of each person on the team during the shooting. Retakes: the successive
shots. Correcting problems. Working models.
• Filming, editing and export of 2 HD Short films for each Student.
