There is much debate in our current athletic culture on sportsmanship and gamesmanship. Stories
of scandals seem to make the news headlines almost weekly in college and professional athletics.
In fact, a story just broke about the Boston Red Sox using an apple watch to steal signs from the
New York Yankees (Olney, 2017). Stealing signs has always been part ofbaseball but using
technology is prohibited. There are numerous other examples of athletic teams bending the rules or
completely breaking the rules in order to gain a competitive advantage.
Sportsmanship is an important part of sports because it ensures that competitors are competing in a
fair and ethical manner. According to Epstein (2016), "The ethics of sports was once fairness.
Fairness meant not taking undue advantage; if anything, it meant allowing such advantages as
chance turned up to go to one's opponent." The Illinois High School Association's slogan for
sportsmanship is, "Do What's Right!" ("Do What's Right"). According to the IHSA athletes and
coaches should, "Represent their school and community favorably through positive interaction with

We picked this project because we thought it would be fun and the kids would love it. The kids
are seventh and eighth graders. it will teach the seventh and eighth graders respect and

The first instance of bad sportsmanship in the story is where Bissinger describes what was said
to Boobie Miles during the previous week's football game. One of the Cooper Cougar's players

simply an act? Sportsmanship can be handled in several different ways. It's how one team handles
another on and off the field. Simply it could also be said as just the way you handle the game in
general after a tough loss, or after an easy win, it how your demeanor is during and after a game.
Sportsmanship can be an Individual, as a team, as a community, or at a deeper meaning all of them
together. Sportsmanship has evolved greatly over the years. Sportsmanship is known as a couple
different names including; professionalism, and showmanship. Unsportsmanlike conduct, this results
in a 15–yard penalty, such as excessive celebration during a game after a score or a well–made play.
For serious instances of unsportsmanlike behavior such as fighting, there are fines, suspensions,
and bans from games, or even tournaments, and championships. These are all examples of poor
sportsmanship. The number one question is why suffer through penalties or pay thousands of
dollars in fines when you can just keep a calm head? Good sportsmanship is the most important

effect this attitude has on the children. I have witnessed this behavior from coaches and
parents, where they have actually embarrassed and humiliated young players in front
of their peers. The negative effect this has on the athletes is obvious. They become

How Fear of Failure and Aggression Effect Sportsmanship Sportsmanship, or lack thereof, is a
real problem in youth sports today. Many kids quit playing due to a poor experience with sports.

on the Youth Sportsman Institute webpage, explains the basic idea of how the role of children's
participation in sports affects their sportsmanship. The report gives examples of how good

match of a football tournament. Young Syedabad Eleven are playing against Hazara Green Football
club. The match is to end within seven minutes and Hazara Green is about to win the tournament.
Now Syedabad Eleven realize that they are not able to win but if they try hard. So they start
struggling and in this attempt start playing rough and injure two players of the opposite team. The

I do think that these skills have helped me in my own life. I have learned that won't always
succeed at everything, but that is okay because I learn something along the way. I have also
experienced competing with some people who exhibited poor sportsmanship before. They would
often say that my team cheated, which was very off putting to us. It made the game not fun
anymore as well as making it harder to focus on it. Improving sportsmanship and teamwork is

Throughout my years of playing sports, I was always told great sportsmanship goes along way
and never leave no man behind. Those two phrases always stuck with me, and during any event
I'm always willing to give a helping hand but I've never thought it would almost cost me my life. It

sportsmanship, motivation and athletic aggression. There we three preset propositions that they
anticipated for their theory: (a) self–determined sport motivation will be positively predictive of
sportspersonship orientations, (b) sportspersonship orientations will mediate the relationship
between self–determined sport motivation and athletic aggression, and (c) sportspersonship
orientations will impact athletic aggression in two distinctive ways. A positive relationship between

Traditionally, investigations have identified the most important factors of sportspersonship
behaviors. These investigations lead to three theoretical ideas. The first approach is the social
learning. This approach believes that young athletes' different experiences of reinforcement mold
their perceptions of what is appropriate or inappropriate conducts within their sport. The
structural–developmental approach has related the participation in high–quality sportspersonship
behaviors to the moral development of young athletes. The believers in this perspective believe that
the more a child uses his or her moral reasoning the less likely they are to use aggression on the
sports field, thereby suggesting behavioral predisposition parallel to those associated with
sportspersonship.
The social–psychological view is the third perspective. This perspective is written about in the most
depth. It explains that sportsmanship can be views in5 different ways. These five views are, "as
"concern and respect for the rules and officials, social conventions, the opponent, as well as one's full
commitment to one's sport and the relative absence of a negative approach to sport participation."
Therefore, the athlete, would be have in correlation with its support of the five sportsmanship
orientations. Another important aspect of this theory is that it sorts out the difference between the
concept of aggression and that of sportsmanship.

If the people arguing are not very stubborn, a winner can be determined. When both people can not
come to an agreement, an alternative will be made. This is the only fair way so both people can get
