Essay on Individualism
Individualism 1) An individualist is considered to be someone with personality and character,
someone who is not easily intimidated by social pressure or customs, someone with a personal
opinion and a singular view of the world. Because modern society finds it important that people think
independently, decide autonomously and take personal initiatives, the concept of individualism has
acquired a positive connotation. However, individualism is also linked with the tendency to
withdraw from social life and turn in towards oneself.
2) Which drives people to withdraw into a small, enclosed world consisting of their family and a few
select friends, leaving the rest of society to its own devices.
3) Courageous individualism refers to...show more content...
9)"Habits of the Heart holds up a mirror to American values, makes us examine ourselves, and
dares us to question where our society is going. [It] will make you question your own habits and
look into your own heart. Not many books possess that ability."
10) This book is about the inevitable conflict between American Individualism and the fact that
humans are by nature social. We hunger for relationship yet we want it only on our terms. Bellah and
his team of reseachers take on the enormous task of interviewing people from all over the country
and the results of these interviews are presented factually and then analyzed. Whether one agrees
with the book's conclusions or not, the interviewees speak for themselves, and they speak for a
majority of Americans today who are often torn by conflicting authoritative messages and motives
from without and within. This book is a marvelous and sometimes unsettling mirror into
contemporary American society.
11) Which examined America's conflict between individualism and social commitment) with one
that focuses on institutions. After acknowledging that we all live in and through both private and
public institutions (families, schools, corporations, the nation, etc.), Bellah and his colleagues argue
that we as an American

Individuality
What makes a person their own individual is a question that can be deeply contemplated. The
reached conclusion is generally a combination of the person's experiences, thoughts, feelings, and
goals. Even though this may seem like a simple answer to this inquiry the solution to a person's
individuality is much more complicated. When asked to attempt to explain who I am on a piece of
paper it required some inward thought. In order to best describe myself, I will attempt to highlight
some important experiences, my thoughts and feelings throughout aforementioned experiences, and
my overall goals in life. The summer of my eleventh grade year I was selected to attend a National
Youth Leadership Convention in Washington D.C. Even though I was nervous

I care for my family deeply and would do absolutely anything for them. From the time I was little I
have always had a close relationship with my family. They have always loved and supported me.
It is through their belief in me and their urge for me to strive to be the best that I can be that I
have always had the courage and the ability to pursue my goals. With their encouragement I have
allowed myself to be fairly ambitious throughout my life. I have had multiple leadership positions
in clubs, tried many sports, and successfully balanced school work and social activities. Currently
my list of goals includes spending as much time with my family as I can when I get home on
college breaks, joining many clubs, making lots of friends, learning as much as possible, and
becoming an extremely successful pharmacist. Following through on these goals, as well as others I
did not mention, will allow me to continue to develop as a kind, happy, and smart

What Is Individuality
Individuality can be defined as the quality or character of a particular person or thing that
distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked. My individuality
is what allows me to differentiate from other humans. There are many factors in my life that
influence me to make my own decisions. One thing that influences my decisions and how I treat
others is my open–mindedness. My mother raised me to be very open–minded, and to accept
anything that comes my way. Throughout my life I have learned to accept all kinds of people,
whether they are of another nationality or ethnicity, they have a different religion, or if they believe
in anything different from what I believe. I have also learned to accept all kinds of...show more

Individuality is the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from
others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked. It is what allows each being in the
world to be their own person. Individuality is very important because without it the world would
be bland and boring. What differs between each of the 7.125 billion people of our world is their
individuality. People need to be different from one another in order for our society to function.
Without individuality there would be no style trends, artwork, scientific theories, or advancement
in society. All together, without individuality our world would be stuck in a backwards way of
living or more specifically our world would be caught in a dark era. Free will is the power of
acting without the constraint of necessity or fate or the ability to act at one's own discretion.
Without free will no person in the world would be able to think for themselves. Our society would
be con–formative and everything would be the same. No person in the world would be able to
think differently from others, and therefore our world would be uninspired and mundane. Ego can
be defined as a person's sense of self–esteem or self–importance. A person without an ego would feel
they have no purpose in life. Without an ego humans would be indifferent, and they would not
have a care in the world because they are not passionate about anything. Egos are what allow
humans to not be afraid to question others and make decisions based on what they believe in.
Without egos there would be no religions, theories, new ideas, inventions, or progress among
humanity. A person with an ego is able to be bold and daring. Most of all a person with an ego is
able to fail. If people were unable to accept failure, then our society today would not exist. Failure is
what made people try new things, think differently, or move forward.

The Individual or Society Essay
"Society exists only as a mental concept; in the real world there are only individuals." What is the
concept of the individual? The common notation is one who separates from society in the pursuit
of his or her own needs, goals, and desires; to define his or her own self and to gain independence
and self–reliance. However, an individual must enter into society to further his or her own self
interest. Due to that contradiction, individualism is often contrasted with society or
anti–individualism. Does the interest of the individual produce society or does the interest of
society produce the individual? To defend individualism will be Soren Kierkegaard and to defend
society will be Bertolt Brecht. What is the price of individuality and is...show more content...
This grew into the demand for civil and political freedom. Individualism blossomed forth, an
individualism in which everybody considered himself the center of the universe and his own
existence and prosperity more important than anyone else's. People set themselves up in opposition
to other people and to society as a whole. The bourgeois were fundamentally individualistic and
propelled western society towards the industrial revolution and toward the series of scientific,
technological, economical and social successes. There was no easy path; it took five hundred years,
but in today's society the human being is no more a number, but an individual.
An individual, although they seek separation, must enter society to further his or her own interests
and demands the right to serve his or her own interest, without sacrifice of self interest for any
higher social cause or the general will. Society can only function to the extent that the people have
interests in common; the end goal of any society is the common good. The general will never
coincide exactly with any individual will in any class, therefore the interest the group rather the
individual is the fundamental unit of social, economic, and political concerns. The interest of the
group will without end dominate the interest of the individual. Since interest of the individual will
always be submissive to the interest of the group. The question that remains to be asked is for which

In an individualist culture, individual personal goals take priority over their constancy to their
groups like family or the business employers. The reliability to a group is extremely feeble; they
believe they have a place within many groups and are able to change their participation as it suits
them, changing religions or places of worship, for instance, or abandoning one job for another. In
an Individualist culture, you learned to grow into your own person, shaping your life to fit into
your own mold rather than that of others. Parents in individualist cultures have a tendency to be
more definitive; they promote advanced freedom, independence, investigation of the earth, and put
less accentuation on dutifulness and friendliness, as opposed to restricting yourself to the
qualifications or stipulations of a group. They want you to figure out how to see yourself as your
own particular being. They want to mentality drive you to see your own novel advantages and
attributes. Things like going to college, drawing, and painting are diversions that could assume an
enormous part of someone's life, yet the group is not needed to drive these interests onto a person.
In addition, being your own individual gives you responsibility for your activities. Furthermore,
when you need to achieve objectives, you need to put in the diligent work as opposed to anticipating
that others will do work for you. An example of individualism would
