Definition Essay: A Short Story
A mother
Not a mommy, mama, ma, or mom
A name not so warm
It's plain and dry
One not like the others
Then flashes and flashes
Some I want to remember,
Some I don't
They flood back in
There she is
Big, tall
And hershy colored
Like me
We entered the door
A stucco roof
A small palm tree
A forbidden kitchen
Then flashes and flashes
Writing
On the wall, on boxes
Then loud talking
A poet at heart
Making new paths
Blowing off the dust
They call her Nzila
Then flashes and flashes
It's us
Mother and I
Quiet in the kitchen
She sends us off
Doesn't care where
'Didn't send for us,'
She says
Then flashes and flashes
Before she goes
The stare we shared
One last goodbye

Definition Essay On Adulthood
Many cultures have different opinions on what adulthood is, and how one can achieve it. Within my
family, adulthood was always thought of as when you turn eighteen. My mom cried on my
eighteenth birthday and told me that she didn't have children anymore, she had adults. However, to a
family that practices Jewish faith, they believe that a male becomes an adult at the age of thirteen,
while a female becomes of age at twelve. Three things that I think that most all cultures believe to
true is how one acts behaviorally, emotionally, and socially. Behaviorally wise, I think that being an
adult means acting accordingly to situations. For example, thinking with an open mind and weighing
every option in a situation before acting. When I was younger,

Definition Essay: What Is A Hero?
"What is a hero?" The word hero can mean whatever a person wants it to mean. Many people define
a role model or person they think is a hero out of their occupations. However, a person does not
become a hero because of their occupation or what they do that we envy. A hero is a person who
takes a bold step or achievement that requires courage, bravery and a kind heart to do it, and the act
is normally done for others. Heroes are not heroes out of their occupations like a doctor. For
example, a doctor's work is to save lives, so when they do this, it is what we expect of them. If a
doctor saves a drowning child from a swimming pool, he becomes a hero. The doctor demonstrates
an act of bravery and courage for the child. So a hero can be any person with or without an
occupation, who performs a bold act for others. A hero just has to be someone to sacrifice
something for others. Heroes can come from anywhere. Heroes do not have to do action acts such
as saving a person. Heroes can even be from acts of kindness. Some...show more content...
A hero goes through many difficulties in a journey that poses so many dangers of failure. Many
people in such situations would give up and turn back. However, heroes persist on despite
challenges and difficulties. Heroes are ordinary people in difficult situations that require courage and
even raise fear in them. However, they manage to overcome their fear in order to persist on until
they accomplish their mission. The difference between those who become heroes and those who do
not is their courage to face difficult situations and never giving up until they accomplish their goal.
Their courage allows them to persist on with any challenge that comes their way, despite standing a
slight chance of winning. They take up the slim chance and manage to use it to their advantage until
they achieve what they intend to achieve for

Definition Essay: What Does Culture Means To Me?
Culture by definition is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's
self–conception and self–perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class,
generation, locality or any type of social group that has its own distinct culture. To me that
definition couldn't be more spot on but let's go more in depth over the past few months in my
English class we have been trying to learn what our culture is and what part culture plays in our
daily lives so in this essay I will be sharing with you what I think culture is what it means to me
and how I think it impacts our way of living and the way we look at each other as human beings
and how we treat each other and how all this makes up my culture...show more content...
To me my cultural identity is made up of many things from the sports I like to the food I eat even
to they way I treat or act to people but most important thing to me would be how people view me
as a person and friend by this I mean my personality and how I treat them because the way I was
raised was that you treat everyone with respect no matter the person place or situation. Secondly
the food we eat is personally my favorite thing about my family culture because the food is great
from tamales to Poole and menudo and even the sports inline which is only one but that doesn't
matter because threw the sport i have made many friends and learned many lessons and the sport
of course is soccer the greatest sport in the world to me and my family at least now where my
view influenced yes and iI am glad they were because if people didn't help me be the way i am
today i don't know how i would have turned out sure iI'mnot perfect no one is but i like how I was
raised and how i have lived my life so far and all because of my family culture and all the people
that made me who i am today so yeah i guess you could say culture is what makes the world spin
and connects people together and to me culture is the most important thing you could have in your
life In conclusion i feel that culture is important in our everyday live and make us who we are and
the people we will become in the feature and influence the course of our lives

Definition: The aim in this essay is to define, explain, and exemplify something. Generally, in
definition essays, we try to make the terms that we use understandable for the reader. Our
understanding of a term may be different from the general concept, or we may be focusing on a
specific aspect. Giving an exact definition would enable the reader to follow the ideas and arguments
in your essay. Organization: Definition of a term is generally given in the introduction. The
development of the essay is dedicated to the explanation of the term. There are many ways to
explain a term. It is also possible to employ more than one of these methods of development. Below

Love is not another seasoning to bottle and stick on the dust–lined shelves of the spice rack. Love is
not to be confused with adhesive tape. Instead, love is a great counterpart to late, evening thunder
storms on hot July nights. Love goes well with cold pizza on picnic blankets. Love is cold, wet sand
between bare toes. Love is a capitalistic sell–all for novels, Top–40 pop songs, summer movies, and
greeting cards.

DEFINITION ESSAY In its simplest terms, love is a four–letter word. Much like other words of
similar letter make up, when expressed it can evoke laughter, pleasure, pain, anger, and virtually any
wave of reaction. Love also can be confused with feelings of indigestion and gas. Houses have been
built, burned, and banished because of love. http://leo.stcloudstate.edu/acadwrite/definition.html

Goodness Definition Essay
Goodness, as defined by Webster's Dictionary, is "The quality of being good in any of its various
senses; excellence; virtue; kindness; benevolence". This means that if you are good, or make
good choices you can achieve excellence, virtue, kindness, and benevolence. If everyone had
goodness, then we would have a world of no crime, no bullies, and no gangs. This is reason why
people should make good decisions in their life. When people make good choices, they have a
good feeling inside. When one sees someone drop their wallet, and he or she picks it up and returns
it to them, they are grateful, which makes people happy or glad that they made that choice. When
one decides to keep that wallet, he or she has just robbed a man (Which is against

Definition Of Monster Essay
Monsters are part of our life. They may be in a horror movie, a scary story you're reading, or they
could even be friendly monsters in a children's movie like Monsters Inc. Some people can even
consider other people as monsters. Everyone sees monsters differently so what is really the meaning
of monsters? The definition of the word monster is an imaginary creature that is typically large,
ugly, and frightening. Is that really the overall meanings of monster though? If you take a look at
the movie Monsters Inc some of the monsters are really nice, small, and even cute. A monster may
or may not be a monster to you. For example in the show Scream everyone thought this kid was a
monster. His name was Brandon James and he had a deformity. Everyone was scared of him
except one girl and who sees him as a monster. Not every monster is a monster to you. It all
depends on what you classify as a monster. My monster is drugs. It never goes away and it harms
many people. It has no excuse other than that it doesn't have a mind or anything. The person who
decides to take or try drugs did it themself. Therefore, the person is kind of like a monster in my
mind. Monsters are things that have been hurt and pushed over the edge that they have transformed
into a killer, they have turned ugly, large, and they turn frightening. They turn due to hatred and bad
feelings, bad experiences, and...show more content...
If you can say you hate something and really mean it then something must have happened to you
for you to say you hate that thing. The word hate means an "intense hostility and aversion usually
deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury." I can only really say I hate one person, but I won't
get into that. In today's society we thrive off of others hating others. We enjoy conflict which is
probably why horror movies are so popular. Horror movies normally start with some kind of fight or
someone hating another. It then goes on to a bunch of murders and

Definition Essay: What Is Happiness?
I define happiness as being the one and only creator of your own experience, choosing to take
pleasure in what you have, right now, regardless of the circumstances, while being the best you that
you can be. Happiness is feeling safe and supported no matter what your doing, and not being
ashamed of who you are. Finally, happiness is, fundamentally, a choice. Your choice.
When one is placed in a situation of misfortune or mishap your mind runs a marathon. Our feelings
are diverse and everyone may present those in differing ways. Although afterwards one comes to
the point where you are faced with whether you want to be happy, or not to be happy. Regardless of
what you choose, what has happened or what is bound to happen will not change. You have to learn
that what has happened is over and sometimes you have to cut ties with people who aren't good for
you, the love isnt lost. But the communication...show more content...
Just because they say they have your back doesn't mean they won't stab you in it. People pretend
well. Jealousy doesn't live far. At the end the day real situations expose fake people. Fake friends
are like shadows they are there for you when you're at your brightest but they hide when you're at
your darkest. I've drowned for people who wouldn't even get in the water for me and this both broke
me and made me stronger.
Instead of lingering on my past i decided to entirely let go. I choose to invest in myself and wake
up every morning with happiness and confidence as part of my mind set. I finally choose myself
rather than others. I can't be happy all the time but i can choose happiness, i can choose for happiness
to consume me and remind me that i am always worth it.
I believe that happiness is embracing what you love and who you are while feeling safe and
supported. Happiness is being in complete utter peace not only with others but with yourself. Finally

What is happiness? Happiness is something that can have many definitions depending on the
person. To me, happiness is very simple. In my life, it could be defined as getting to spend as much
time with the people I love most. Being able to take them to the beach and play until we are so tired
we can't see straight. Another example of happiness for me is that I am able to look back on past
memories and laugh and smile about them. We learned lots of lessons and made plenty of mistakes
in the process, but we are better for them. I am also happy that there is something called Pinterest.

Definition Essay: The Importance Of Confidence
Most people I run into now days seem to lack a very important quality. In fact I am not sure if
many adults or even kids are brought up to have confidence, whether it's in themselves as an
individual or in their coaches or teachers. Confidence can be described in several different ways,
and also be used as a noun or adjective. The most common definition is as a noun. "Confidence is
the belief in one's power or ability" but can also mean "full trust; belief in the powers,
trustworthiness, or reliability of a person." As I volunteer at the schools, I observe kids that have no
self–esteem, and that doubt their abilities to achieve or succeed in school or sports. Sometimes it is
their uncertainty to do things with others or complete...show more content...
I also tell her that it is good for her to have some of the same qualities. In her high school years she
would go through friends so fast since she could not trust them with "a secret." This is also
known as confidence, "a secret or private matter, not to be divulged or communicated to others;
with belief in a person's sense of discretion." Girls as well as all kids like to talk and gossip. So
breaking a friend's confidence happens a lot. Therefore she lost friends since she could not trust
them. It is funny as she was still in school she always told me, the boys there are not trustworthy.
That she could not see herself dating any of them. We talk about how important it is for her to have
the confidence in them as well as herself. Most importantly in herself, to have the ability to succeed
at anything she sets out in. And furthermore, for her to have the faith and trust in her friends and
especially in someone she wants to date. An extremely important distinguishing feature to have is
"confidence." Whether it be self–esteem, sureness and certainty, or optimism. Maybe you have the
faith to trust others as friends or leaders. It is important to have the "confidence" or the ability to
succeed at something. Everyone needs to be able to have the "confidence" to confide in someone
and them to not betray your secret. Confidence is a word used in many ways

What Is Ambition Essay
"A dream without ambition is like a car without gas...you're not going anywhere," (Hampton).
Ambition is something many people have however many people don't know what the true meaning
of ambition is. The dictionary definition of ambition is, "a strong desire to do or to achieve
something, typically requiring determination and hard work" (Dictionary.com). Ambition has made
great leaders since the dawn of time, like Cleopatra, and any great leader adopts, or already
possesses, six habits that are found in the minds and hearts of two of the greatest leaders of the 20th
century, Nelson Mandela and Gandhi, but ambition can be seen as a two–faced word causing it to
have a negative light as well. Humans adapted to change for centuries. Humans adapted to weather,
to wars, and to other humans. Every creature, not just humans, have had to develop over time to new
habits and traits to help them survive. Ambition is one trait that has been around for centuries buried
inside the minds and hearts of humans. The...show more content...
Stacy Schiff stated, "She lost her kingdom once; regained it; nearly lost it again; amassed an
empire; lost it all" (Schiff). The statement explains that Cleopatra had enough ambition to keep

ambition. Ambition gave her the strength and determination to fight for her kingdom, even when
she lost it. Cleopatra lost her kingdom at least twice, almost three times, however, she battled
through it and kept getting her kingdom back. Cleopatra's ambition made her a great ancient leader
and female leader, "Even at a time when female rulers were no rarity, Cleopatra stood out, the sole
woman of her world to rule alone" (Schiff). Ambition has made Cleopatra stand out as a great and
ambitious leader. She helped create the six habits that create great

Essay What is Intelligence?
What is Intelligence?
Intelligence can be defined in many different ways since there are a variety of individual
differences. Intelligence to me is the ability to reason and respond quickly yet accurately in all
aspects of life, such as physically, emotionally, and mentally. Anyone can define intelligence because
it is an open–ended word that has much room for interpretation. Thus my paper is an attempt to find
the meaning of human intelligence. There are a couple of scientists who have tried to come up with
theories of what makes a human being intelligent.
Jean Piaget, a Swiss child psychologist, is well known for his four stages of mental growth theory
(1). In the sensorimotor stage, from birth to age 2, the child is concerned...show more content...
(3)
Even though Jean Piaget's theory was interesting, I found Howard Gardener's, a psychologist at
Harvard University, theory even more intriguing. He arranged human intelligence into seven sections
and they are body–kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, logical–mathematical,
musical, and spatial intelligence. Gardner believes that everyone has a mixture of all the categories
varying at different levels. We can see a couple of intelligences that stand out in people we know
and including ourselves. (2)
For example, as a math major, I would consider the logical–mathematical intelligence to be more
predominant than my linguistic intelligence based on the name of the categories. In fact, Gardner
characterizes the logistical–mathematical intelligence as people who think logically and are able to
transfer abstract concepts to reality. These people enjoy solving puzzles and can be good inventors
because they can visualize an invention even before making a prototype (2). They normally do
better in school, which is for the most part due to the fact that schools are designed for
logical–mathematical type of thinkers.
The linguistic type, as you may have guessed, are the natural born writers and poets. They usually
have excellent storytelling skills, spelling skills, and love to play with words. They tend to be
bookworms and can easily learn more than one language. Best form of learning is through hearing,
speaking, or seeing words.

Forgiveness by the World English Dictionary is the "act of forgiving; state of being forgiven,
disposition or willingness to forgive". But what does it really mean? That is my question. Is being
able to forgive and not forget the same thing? In my life, I have found that true forgiveness is a
quality that separates us from other species and it is what makes us human. In order to truly and
sincerely forgive, one must, aside from saying they have forgiven the person, let it go and not hold
a grudge against that person. Just, as Mahatma Gandhi once said: "The weak can never forgive.
Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I believe that holds to be true.

I found that I forgave easier or not depending on severity of the circumstance and on the person
whom I was forgiving or not. I believe it is easier to forgive an enemy than a person you love
because a loved one are not supposed to hurt you in any way. I realized that those who I care more
cause the most pain.
When I was a child, every time I saw my mother crying and hurting from all the abuse induced by
her husband, the person who was supposed to protect her, I ask God, why? I never received an
answer. As the abuse continued and life went on, I was never able to forgive him for thesuffering
that he caused not only to my mother, but to me as well. I was carrying all the miseries from my
childhood and taking out on the people who love and care for me. There was no closure for the
pain and suffering. The only person that I saw comfort and security from was my father, a man
who never allowed me to pity myself or blame myself for other's actions. He was always there for
me until my eighteenth birthday when he decided that I was "old enough to be on my own;" it was
his own way to attempt making me independent. Everything became blurry at that point in my life.
There was nowhere to turn except the only person who had the opportunities in her eighty years to
master the meaning of true forgiveness: my grandmother, Consuelo, which her name literally means
to console. Living with her and listening to her life stories allowed me to comprehend

Dreams Definition Essay
Dreams. We all have them. But why? What causes us to dream about the seemingly most random
things? A dream, by definition, is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a
person's mind during sleep. Therefore, the quality of a person's sleep must somehow affect their
dreaming patterns. There are 5 stages of sleep that a person passes through each night, supposing
that the person actually goes to sleep. Stage 1 of sleep is very light and lasts for about 10 to 15
minutes. Brain activity lowers to around 50% or more. This slowly leads us into a deeper sleep
and it is not uncommon to experience myoclonic jerks and hypnagogic imagery while thus stage
progresses. During stage 2 of sleep our brain activity lowers even more and the

Essay on The Meaning of Life
The Meaning of Life
My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from
which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there
can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned
above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not
to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there
is no single meaning of life to be defined – life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define
life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so.

Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story – or
great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life
meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or
her role."
At the time, this event seemed rather insignificant and did not merit remembrance. However, its
catastrophic effects on my attitude that evening may have helped to mold me into the person I have
become. I learned that suffering through such an event, as childish as it was, is quite necessary in
any life. Such pains are part of an interminable cycle and only generate balance in one's life (p. 62,
'Life as Suffering'). Despite my horrid time spent that evening, the laughter brought since the incident
is a worthy tradeoff. Laughter is an all too necessary function of life, just as suffering and the wide
range of other emotions. "Some thinkers would emphasize the importance of sophistication in
humor, but others would say that laughter itself is what is important." Whatever the case may be,
laughter is an important ingredient in life, and must not be taken for granted nor ignored.
Despite such emotional ties to life, I have also learned that life is not only about emotions. Those
emotions are generated from the chain reactions created endlessly in

Definition Of American Democracy
American Democracy
It's hard to define something big as democracy in few short words, but president Abraham Lincoln
does it best by defining democracy as a "Government of the people, by the people, for the people"
(Bleicherstrasse). The Merriam Webster Dictionary barely scratches the surface of what democracy
really means. It tries to define democracy as "a form of government in which people choose
leaders by voting, a country ruled by democracy, an organization or situation in which everyone is
treated equally and has equal rights", but democracy is so much more than that. For a government
to be considered true democracy it must support these four key elements "A political system for
choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections, the active participation of
the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life, protection of the human rights of all citizens, a
rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens" (Diamond, 2004). If we
go by this definition of democracy than America is not consider to be true democracy.
When we look at Merriam Webster Dictionary definition of Democracy, it's far from perfect. It
tries to define democracy as "a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting, a
country ruled by democracy, and an organization or situation in which everyone is treated equally
and has equal rights". By going with this definition it's hard to say the American political system is
democratic when so many

What Is Religion? Essay
What is religion? Each person's definition of religion is different. Each person's faith is different.
This is a question that has been asked for centuries, and regardless of the answer given there is no
right or wrong answer. Religion can be defined as a group of people who have shared beliefs who
feel their life has purpose or meaning. This feeling or belief that their life has meaning can come
from outside of themselves, as well as within. Taking this one step further, these shared beliefs put
into action in the form of worship, can be easily identified because they happen regularly. It can be

They are teachings learned by previous generations then passed down, they are not always

assurance that reality is on our side and can be counted on." Lastly there is mystery. For this there
is no exact definition, but it is all of what a religion cannot explain, it is all that the human mind
cannot grasp, it is the certain "higher power" that religion offers. Of these six features, there are
three that are present in most all religions, they are: authority, tradition, and mystery. Authority,
tradition, and mystery further explore and define religion when looking specifically at Primal
Religions, Confucianism, and Taoism. Primal Religions are often mistaken to be the religion of the
primitive man, often thought to be unintelligent. There is a definition of "primal" that is better
suited than unintelligent or primitive. Primal in terms of religion, refers to the lack of exposure to
technology, it is not "knowing" the state of consciousness given to many by the technological
environment. Primal religions preceded organized religion as we know it today by thousands of
years, in some cases millions, but are still present in the world today; we now call them tribal
religions. Within primal religions there are people who are knowledgeable about life, who are

Definition Essay On Courage
The word courage, brings with it, ideas of a brave warrior. A hero who comes out against all odds.
Why is it that nearly everyone pictures the same thing? It is indeed a correct version but definitely
not the only one. Courage is sticking through pain and adversity to overcome any situation or event
thrown at a person in life.
When discussing courage, many people are able to apply this to a never ending possibility of
situations. When I think of courage, as well as many others, it is associated with stories of knights
in shining armor saving the damsel in distress. Courage is almost always exaggerated when it
doesn't necessarily need to be. Courage comes in all shapes and sizes.
Courage can be found in a woman who is fighting each and everyday to get rid of cancer. She goes
through hours and hours of demoralizing treatment and accepts the side effects and
consequences of doing so. Yet, she never gives up because she knows that her will and
determination will prevail. A man, who just lost his wife, and first ever true love, puts a smile on
his face and returns to work. A child, at age seven, who loses their first pet dog and true
companion to a car accident. A teenage girl was thrown onto the streets by her deranged family,
gets a doctorate degree and discovers a new and revolutionary cure. This is how courage is shown in
everyday life.

My Definition of Success Essay example
"Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value."
– Albert Einstein ––
My personal definition would not include "stuff" at all. No one will care (and neither will you)
what kind of car your drove or how big your house was when you're on your deathbed. Your
thoughts will not be about your job, the office or how much money you made.
Personal success is defined by how content and enjoyable your life is. That is not to say that
challenges and disappointments aren't included in this. A rich, eventful and challenging life doing
what you enjoy and positively affecting others seems to me to be just about right. Find a job you
love and you'll never work another day in your life. I know I won't. In my...show more content...
Past, present and future are all important to keep in perspective. Looking back and not having regrets
is extremely satisfying. Your current situation and your contentment with it are also very important,
and having goals and milestones to work toward in the future keeps you motivated and keeps life
interesting and challenging.
In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or
the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you've accumulated. I find that the older I
grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most
successful. Rich, poor or in between, they've tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination.
They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn't afford it, they ordered the
$55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would
enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start–up company,
moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed
to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is
practiced, things won't spin out of control.
Bottom line rules for a successful life:
Always try new things.
Listen twice as much as you talk.
Travel as much as you can comfortably afford.
Faith and family always come first –

What is Love? Essay
Love, Love, Love. We all think about it, dream about it, sing about it, and even lose sleep
worrying about it, but why? Love is such a small word paired with a vital meaning. It's universal,
easy to spell, difficult to define, but impossible to live without. When we don't have it, we search
for it, when we find it, we don't know what to do with it, when we have it, we fear losing it. Love is
the constant source of happiness and sorrow. I am young and I haven't a clue as to what love is, let

the beauty of people falling in love, or the severity of those falling out of love, so what is love?
Love in general could be frightening. Some...show more content...
I think falling in love with someone happens when you least expect it to, when you're too busy
focusing on other aspects of your life. This is where fate comes into play. That specific person
was led to you for some unknown reason. Out of the blues, it's like your knight in shining amour
that you have longed to be with finally found his/her way to you. There are people in this world
that think they may never fall in love again. You fall at times, but you get back up. You will love
again, and you will also trust again. You have to simply let things get themselves done, that's when
you know it's meant to be, because destiny took its course, and while you were too busy doing
something else, the love of your life came along.
Love dates way back to when the world began. In reality, we really have no idea what love truly is.
Raising questions like, is it even real? We watch love movies, read romance novels, but that's the
sugar–coated, sweet and simple version of it. Meeting someone, fall in love, get married, have
kids, spend the rest of your lives together. What about the suffering we have to endure when falling
in love? Risking everything for that one person? And even when we feel we've reached the end of
the road, this person has the power to leave us at any given moment. We put ourselves out there with
the chance they can break us apart.
Love, as it is with everything,

  • 3. Definition Essay On Adulthood Many cultures have different opinions on what adulthood is, and how one can achieve it. Within my family, adulthood was always thought of as when you turn eighteen. My mom cried on my eighteenth birthday and told me that she didn't have children anymore, she had adults. However, to a family that practices Jewish faith, they believe that a male becomes an adult at the age of thirteen, while a female becomes of age at twelve. Three things that I think that most all cultures believe to true is how one acts behaviorally, emotionally, and socially. Behaviorally wise, I think that being an adult means acting accordingly to situations. For example, thinking with an open mind and weighing every option in a situation before acting. • 4. Definition Essay: What Is A Hero? "What is a hero?" The word hero can mean whatever a person wants it to mean. Many people define a role model or person they think is a hero out of their occupations. However, a person does not become a hero because of their occupation or what they do that we envy. A hero is a person who takes a bold step or achievement that requires courage, bravery and a kind heart to do it, and the act is normally done for others. Heroes are not heroes out of their occupations like a doctor. For example, a doctor's work is to save lives, so when they do this, it is what we expect of them. If a doctor saves a drowning child from a swimming pool, he becomes a hero. The doctor demonstrates an act of bravery and courage for the child. So a hero can be any person with or without an occupation, who performs a bold act for others. A hero just has to be someone to sacrifice something for others. Heroes can come from anywhere. Heroes do not have to do action acts such as saving a person. Heroes can even be from acts of kindness. Some...show more content... A hero goes through many difficulties in a journey that poses so many dangers of failure. Many people in such situations would give up and turn back. However, heroes persist on despite challenges and difficulties. Heroes are ordinary people in difficult situations that require courage and even raise fear in them. However, they manage to overcome their fear in order to persist on until they accomplish their mission. The difference between those who become heroes and those who do not is their courage to face difficult situations and never giving up until they accomplish their goal. Their courage allows them to persist on with any challenge that comes their way, despite standing a slight chance of winning. They take up the slim chance and manage to use it to their advantage until they achieve what they intend to achieve for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Definition Essay: What Does Culture Means To Me? Culture by definition is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's self–conception and self–perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any type of social group that has its own distinct culture. To me that definition couldn't be more spot on but let's go more in depth over the past few months in my English class we have been trying to learn what our culture is and what part culture plays in our daily lives so in this essay I will be sharing with you what I think culture is what it means to me and how I think it impacts our way of living and the way we look at each other as human beings and how we treat each other and how all this makes up my culture...show more content... To me my cultural identity is made up of many things from the sports I like to the food I eat even to they way I treat or act to people but most important thing to me would be how people view me as a person and friend by this I mean my personality and how I treat them because the way I was raised was that you treat everyone with respect no matter the person place or situation. Secondly the food we eat is personally my favorite thing about my family culture because the food is great from tamales to Poole and menudo and even the sports inline which is only one but that doesn't matter because threw the sport i have made many friends and learned many lessons and the sport of course is soccer the greatest sport in the world to me and my family at least now where my view influenced yes and iI am glad they were because if people didn't help me be the way i am today i don't know how i would have turned out sure iI'mnot perfect no one is but i like how I was raised and how i have lived my life so far and all because of my family culture and all the people that made me who i am today so yeah i guess you could say culture is what makes the world spin and connects people together and to me culture is the most important thing you could have in your life In conclusion i feel that culture is important in our everyday live and make us who we are and the people we will become in the feature and influence the course of our lives Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Generally, in definition essays, we try to make the terms that we use understandable for the reader. • 7. Goodness Definition Essay Goodness, as defined by Webster's Dictionary, is "The quality of being good in any of its various senses; excellence; virtue; kindness; benevolence". This means that if you are good, or make good choices you can achieve excellence, virtue, kindness, and benevolence. If everyone had goodness, then we would have a world of no crime, no bullies, and no gangs. This is reason why people should make good decisions in their life. When people make good choices, they have a good feeling inside. When one sees someone drop their wallet, and he or she picks it up and returns it to them, they are grateful, which makes people happy or glad that they made that choice. • 8. Definition Of Monster Essay Monsters are part of our life. They may be in a horror movie, a scary story you're reading, or they could even be friendly monsters in a children's movie like Monsters Inc. Some people can even consider other people as monsters. Everyone sees monsters differently so what is really the meaning of monsters? The definition of the word monster is an imaginary creature that is typically large, ugly, and frightening. Is that really the overall meanings of monster though? If you take a look at the movie Monsters Inc some of the monsters are really nice, small, and even cute. A monster may or may not be a monster to you. For example in the show Scream everyone thought this kid was a monster. His name was Brandon James and he had a deformity. Everyone was scared of him except one girl and who sees him as a monster. Not every monster is a monster to you. It all depends on what you classify as a monster. My monster is drugs. It never goes away and it harms many people. It has no excuse other than that it doesn't have a mind or anything. The person who decides to take or try drugs did it themself. Therefore, the person is kind of like a monster in my mind. Monsters are things that have been hurt and pushed over the edge that they have transformed into a killer, they have turned ugly, large, and they turn frightening. They turn due to hatred and bad feelings, bad experiences, and...show more content... The word hate means an "intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury." I can only really say I hate one person, but I won't get into that. In today's society we thrive off of others hating others. We enjoy conflict which is probably why horror movies are so popular. • 9. Definition Essay: What Is Happiness? I define happiness as being the one and only creator of your own experience, choosing to take pleasure in what you have, right now, regardless of the circumstances, while being the best you that you can be. Happiness is feeling safe and supported no matter what your doing, and not being ashamed of who you are. Finally, happiness is, fundamentally, a choice. Your choice. When one is placed in a situation of misfortune or mishap your mind runs a marathon. Our feelings are diverse and everyone may present those in differing ways. Although afterwards one comes to the point where you are faced with whether you want to be happy, or not to be happy. Regardless of what you choose, what has happened or what is bound to happen will not change. You have to learn that what has happened is over and sometimes you have to cut ties with people who aren't good for you, the love isnt lost. But the communication...show more content... In my life, it could be defined as getting to spend as much time with the people I love most. Being able to take them to the beach and play until we are so tired we can't see straight. Another example of happiness for me is that I am able to look back on past memories and laugh and smile about them. We learned lots of lessons and made plenty of mistakes in the process, but we are better for them. I am also happy that there is something called Pinterest. • 11. Definition Essay: The Importance Of Confidence Most people I run into now days seem to lack a very important quality. In fact I am not sure if many adults or even kids are brought up to have confidence, whether it's in themselves as an individual or in their coaches or teachers. Confidence can be described in several different ways, and also be used as a noun or adjective. The most common definition is as a noun. "Confidence is the belief in one's power or ability" but can also mean "full trust; belief in the powers, trustworthiness, or reliability of a person." As I volunteer at the schools, I observe kids that have no self–esteem, and that doubt their abilities to achieve or succeed in school or sports. Sometimes it is their uncertainty to do things with others or complete...show more content... I also tell her that it is good for her to have some of the same qualities. In her high school years she would go through friends so fast since she could not trust them with "a secret." This is also known as confidence, "a secret or private matter, not to be divulged or communicated to others; with belief in a person's sense of discretion." Girls as well as all kids like to talk and gossip. So breaking a friend's confidence happens a lot. Therefore she lost friends since she could not trust them. It is funny as she was still in school she always told me, the boys there are not trustworthy. That she could not see herself dating any of them. We talk about how important it is for her to have the confidence in them as well as herself. Most importantly in herself, to have the ability to succeed at anything she sets out in. And furthermore, for her to have the faith and trust in her friends and especially in someone she wants to date. An extremely important distinguishing feature to have is "confidence." Whether it be self–esteem, sureness and certainty, or optimism. Maybe you have the faith to trust others as friends or leaders. It is important to have the "confidence" or the ability to succeed at something. Everyone needs to be able to have the "confidence" to confide in someone and them to not betray your secret. • 12. What Is Ambition Essay "A dream without ambition is like a car without gas...you're not going anywhere," (Hampton). Ambition is something many people have however many people don't know what the true meaning of ambition is. The dictionary definition of ambition is, "a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work" (Dictionary.com). Ambition has made great leaders since the dawn of time, like Cleopatra, and any great leader adopts, or already possesses, six habits that are found in the minds and hearts of two of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, Nelson Mandela and Gandhi, but ambition can be seen as a two–faced word causing it to have a negative light as well. Humans adapted to change for centuries. Humans adapted to weather, to wars, and to other humans. Every creature, not just humans, have had to develop over time to new habits and traits to help them survive. Ambition is one trait that has been around for centuries buried inside the minds and hearts of humans. The...show more content... Stacy Schiff stated, "She lost her kingdom once; regained it; nearly lost it again; amassed an empire; lost it all" (Schiff). Ambition gave her the strength and determination to fight for her kingdom, even when she lost it. Cleopatra lost her kingdom at least twice, almost three times, however, she battled through it and kept getting her kingdom back. Cleopatra's ambition made her a great ancient leader and female leader, "Even at a time when female rulers were no rarity, Cleopatra stood out, the sole woman of her world to rule alone" (Schiff). • 13. Essay What is Intelligence? What is Intelligence? Intelligence can be defined in many different ways since there are a variety of individual differences. Intelligence to me is the ability to reason and respond quickly yet accurately in all aspects of life, such as physically, emotionally, and mentally. Anyone can define intelligence because it is an open–ended word that has much room for interpretation. Thus my paper is an attempt to find the meaning of human intelligence. There are a couple of scientists who have tried to come up with theories of what makes a human being intelligent. Jean Piaget, a Swiss child psychologist, is well known for his four stages of mental growth theory (1). In the sensorimotor stage, from birth to age 2, the child is concerned...show more content... (3) Even though Jean Piaget's theory was interesting, I found Howard Gardener's, a psychologist at Harvard University, theory even more intriguing. He arranged human intelligence into seven sections and they are body–kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, linguistic, logical–mathematical, musical, and spatial intelligence. Gardner believes that everyone has a mixture of all the categories varying at different levels. We can see a couple of intelligences that stand out in people we know and including ourselves. (2) For example, as a math major, I would consider the logical–mathematical intelligence to be more predominant than my linguistic intelligence based on the name of the categories. In fact, Gardner characterizes the logistical–mathematical intelligence as people who think logically and are able to transfer abstract concepts to reality. These people enjoy solving puzzles and can be good inventors because they can visualize an invention even before making a prototype (2). They normally do better in school, which is for the most part due to the fact that schools are designed for logical–mathematical type of thinkers. The linguistic type, as you may have guessed, are the natural born writers and poets. They usually have excellent storytelling skills, spelling skills, and love to play with words. They tend to be bookworms and can easily learn more than one language. Best form of learning is through hearing, speaking, or seeing words. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Definition Essay Definition Essay Forgiveness by the World English Dictionary is the "act of forgiving; state of being forgiven, disposition or willingness to forgive". But what does it really mean? That is my question. Is being able to forgive and not forget the same thing? In my life, I have found that true forgiveness is a quality that separates us from other species and it is what makes us human. In order to truly and sincerely forgive, one must, aside from saying they have forgiven the person, let it go and not hold a grudge against that person. Just, as Mahatma Gandhi once said: "The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I believe that holds to be true. Only a humble human being can attain the quality to completely...show more content... I found that I forgave easier or not depending on severity of the circumstance and on the person whom I was forgiving or not. I believe it is easier to forgive an enemy than a person you love because a loved one are not supposed to hurt you in any way. I realized that those who I care more cause the most pain. When I was a child, every time I saw my mother crying and hurting from all the abuse induced by her husband, the person who was supposed to protect her, I ask God, why? I never received an answer. As the abuse continued and life went on, I was never able to forgive him for thesuffering that he caused not only to my mother, but to me as well. I was carrying all the miseries from my childhood and taking out on the people who love and care for me. There was no closure for the pain and suffering. The only person that I saw comfort and security from was my father, a man who never allowed me to pity myself or blame myself for other's actions. He was always there for me until my eighteenth birthday when he decided that I was "old enough to be on my own;" it was his own way to attempt making me independent. Everything became blurry at that point in my life. There was nowhere to turn except the only person who had the opportunities in her eighty years to master the meaning of true forgiveness: my grandmother, Consuelo, which her name literally means to console. Living with her and listening to her life stories allowed me to comprehend Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Dreams Definition Essay Dreams. We all have them. But why? What causes us to dream about the seemingly most random things? A dream, by definition, is a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person's mind during sleep. Therefore, the quality of a person's sleep must somehow affect their dreaming patterns. There are 5 stages of sleep that a person passes through each night, supposing that the person actually goes to sleep. Stage 1 of sleep is very light and lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes. Brain activity lowers to around 50% or more. This slowly leads us into a deeper sleep and it is not uncommon to experience myoclonic jerks and hypnagogic imagery while thus stage progresses. During stage 2 of sleep our brain activity lowers even more and the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Essay on The Meaning of Life The Meaning of Life My few years on this planet have been a bit confusing. I have learned of many aspects of life from which one can draw meaning, if indeed such meaning can be drawn. I have also learned that there can be no singular meaning of life to stand for us all, or even any one of us. What I have learned above all is that trying to put words to the meaning of life is a task of absolute absurdity. This is not to be confused with the idea that life has no meaning, for life certainly has meaning. However, there is no single meaning of life to be defined – life is different for us all. Therefore, rather than define life for an entire planet, I shall try to explain what life means as I perceive it, and why it means so. ...show more content... Life is a complicated twist of suffering, laughing, and learning all merging to tell a great story – or great many stories. Based on this view, "it is not the end goal or outcome of life that gives life meaning but rather the quality of the story, the quality with which one lives out and develops his or her role." At the time, this event seemed rather insignificant and did not merit remembrance. However, its catastrophic effects on my attitude that evening may have helped to mold me into the person I have become. I learned that suffering through such an event, as childish as it was, is quite necessary in any life. Such pains are part of an interminable cycle and only generate balance in one's life (p. 62, 'Life as Suffering'). Despite my horrid time spent that evening, the laughter brought since the incident is a worthy tradeoff. Laughter is an all too necessary function of life, just as suffering and the wide range of other emotions. "Some thinkers would emphasize the importance of sophistication in humor, but others would say that laughter itself is what is important." Whatever the case may be, laughter is an important ingredient in life, and must not be taken for granted nor ignored. Despite such emotional ties to life, I have also learned that life is not only about emotions. Those emotions are generated from the chain reactions created endlessly in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Definition Of American Democracy American Democracy It's hard to define something big as democracy in few short words, but president Abraham Lincoln does it best by defining democracy as a "Government of the people, by the people, for the people" (Bleicherstrasse). The Merriam Webster Dictionary barely scratches the surface of what democracy really means. It tries to define democracy as "a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting, a country ruled by democracy, an organization or situation in which everyone is treated equally and has equal rights", but democracy is so much more than that. For a government to be considered true democracy it must support these four key elements "A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections, the active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life, protection of the human rights of all citizens, a rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens" (Diamond, 2004). If we go by this definition of democracy than America is not consider to be true democracy. When we look at Merriam Webster Dictionary definition of Democracy, it's far from perfect. It tries to define democracy as "a form of government in which people choose leaders by voting, a country ruled by democracy, and an organization or situation in which everyone is treated equally and has equal rights". By going with this definition it's hard to say the American political system is democratic when so many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. What Is Religion? Essay What is religion? Each person's definition of religion is different. Each person's faith is different. This is a question that has been asked for centuries, and regardless of the answer given there is no right or wrong answer. Religion can be defined as a group of people who have shared beliefs who feel their life has purpose or meaning. This feeling or belief that their life has meaning can come from outside of themselves, as well as within. Taking this one step further, these shared beliefs put into action in the form of worship, can be easily identified because they happen regularly. It can be said the Primal religions were in fact not religions. Some may argue Confucianism is not a religion. Others may say Taoism is not a...show more content... They are teachings learned by previous generations then passed down, they are not always actions. The fifth feature of religion is grace. Grace is defined by Smith as "the belief and assurance that reality is on our side and can be counted on." Lastly there is mystery. For this there is no exact definition, but it is all of what a religion cannot explain, it is all that the human mind cannot grasp, it is the certain "higher power" that religion offers. Of these six features, there are three that are present in most all religions, they are: authority, tradition, and mystery. Authority, tradition, and mystery further explore and define religion when looking specifically at Primal Religions, Confucianism, and Taoism. Primal Religions are often mistaken to be the religion of the primitive man, often thought to be unintelligent. There is a definition of "primal" that is better suited than unintelligent or primitive. Primal in terms of religion, refers to the lack of exposure to technology, it is not "knowing" the state of consciousness given to many by the technological environment. Primal religions preceded organized religion as we know it today by thousands of years, in some cases millions, but are still present in the world today; we now call them tribal religions. Within primal religions there are people who are knowledgeable about life, who are knowledgeable about Defining Religion–4 traditions, and who are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Definition Essay On Courage The word courage, brings with it, ideas of a brave warrior. A hero who comes out against all odds. Why is it that nearly everyone pictures the same thing? It is indeed a correct version but definitely not the only one. Courage is sticking through pain and adversity to overcome any situation or event thrown at a person in life. When discussing courage, many people are able to apply this to a never ending possibility of situations. When I think of courage, as well as many others, it is associated with stories of knights in shining armor saving the damsel in distress. Courage is almost always exaggerated when it doesn't necessarily need to be. Courage comes in all shapes and sizes. Courage can be found in a woman who is fighting each and everyday to get rid of cancer. She goes through hours and hours of demoralizing treatment and accepts the side effects and consequences of doing so. Yet, she never gives up because she knows that her will and determination will prevail. A man, who just lost his wife, and first ever true love, puts a smile on his face and returns to work. A child, at age seven, who loses their first pet dog and true companion to a car accident. A teenage girl was thrown onto the streets by her deranged family, gets a doctorate degree and discovers a new and revolutionary cure. This is how courage is shown in everyday life. Leadership...show more content... Everyday people are susceptible to courage. Overconfidence is individuals, has commonly shown failures throughout history. The mighty British empire believed that they could destroy an army of farmers within a matter of months. The Revolutionary War lasted nearly eight years and the British did not win. They put too much confidence is their military because of courage and victories that had occurred years before. Courage also requires infinite sacrifices. • 20. My Definition of Success Essay example "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." – Albert Einstein –– My personal definition would not include "stuff" at all. No one will care (and neither will you) what kind of car your drove or how big your house was when you're on your deathbed. Your thoughts will not be about your job, the office or how much money you made. Personal success is defined by how content and enjoyable your life is. That is not to say that challenges and disappointments aren't included in this. A rich, eventful and challenging life doing what you enjoy and positively affecting others seems to me to be just about right. Find a job you love and you'll never work another day in your life. I know I won't. In my...show more content... Past, present and future are all important to keep in perspective. Looking back and not having regrets is extremely satisfying. Your current situation and your contentment with it are also very important, and having goals and milestones to work toward in the future keeps you motivated and keeps life interesting and challenging. In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you've accumulated. I find that the older I grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most successful. Rich, poor or in between, they've tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination. They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn't afford it, they ordered the $55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start–up company, moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is practiced, things won't spin out of control. Bottom line rules for a successful life: Always try new things. Listen twice as much as you talk. Travel as much as you can comfortably afford. Faith and family always come first – Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. What is Love? Essay Love, Love, Love. We all think about it, dream about it, sing about it, and even lose sleep worrying about it, but why? Love is such a small word paired with a vital meaning. It's universal, easy to spell, difficult to define, but impossible to live without. When we don't have it, we search for it, when we find it, we don't know what to do with it, when we have it, we fear losing it. Love is the constant source of happiness and sorrow. I am young and I haven't a clue as to what love is, let alone what falling in love is. However, I have my ideas of what love is like. I have never witnessed the beauty of people falling in love, or the severity of those falling out of love, so what is love? Love in general could be frightening. Some...show more content... I think falling in love with someone happens when you least expect it to, when you're too busy focusing on other aspects of your life. This is where fate comes into play. That specific person was led to you for some unknown reason. Out of the blues, it's like your knight in shining amour that you have longed to be with finally found his/her way to you. There are people in this world that think they may never fall in love again. You fall at times, but you get back up. You will love again, and you will also trust again. You have to simply let things get themselves done, that's when you know it's meant to be, because destiny took its course, and while you were too busy doing something else, the love of your life came along. Love dates way back to when the world began. In reality, we really have no idea what love truly is. Raising questions like, is it even real? We watch love movies, read romance novels, but that's the sugar–coated, sweet and simple version of it. Meeting someone, fall in love, get married, have kids, spend the rest of your lives together. What about the suffering we have to endure when falling in love? Risking everything for that one person? And even when we feel we've reached the end of the road, this person has the power to leave us at any given moment. We put ourselves out there with the chance they can break us apart. Love, as it is with everything, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
