The Tipping
Point
The Author – Malcolm Gladwell
In epidemiology
the tipping point is
that moment when a
small change tips the
balance of a system and
brings about a large
change; for example,
when the normal spread
of influenza throughout
a population suddenly
turns into an epidemic.

3. Malcolm Gladwell is a British-born Canadian author of five New York
Times bestsellers: The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog
Saw, and David and Goliath. He started his writing career working for
conservative publications. Then, he became a staff writer at The New
Yorker in 1996. Gladwell gained popularity with two particular New
Yorker articles that year, ‗The Tipping Point‘ and ‗The Coolhunt.‘ These
two articles formed the basis for this book, The Tipping Point.
Malcolm has been working at The New Yorker ever since. Malcolm is
the co-founder of Pushkin Industries, an audio content company that
produces Malcolm‘s podcasts Revisionist History and Broken Record.
About the Author:
4. The Tipping Point explains how ideas spread
like epidemics and which few elements need to
come together to help an idea reach the
point of critical mass, where its viral effect
becomes unstoppable.

5. The Tipping Point considers why certain
products, diseases, or ideas become viral.
Each epidemic shares a few common features
that are enough to kickstart a significant rise in
sales, diagnoses, or conversations. Malcolm
Gladwell considers the importance of context
and the finer details in our environments. Plus,
he provides an outline of the types of people
who are integral to spreading an epidemic.
Quick Understanding
6. Three rules of the tipping point: He
proposes three laws of tipping
points: The law of the few, the
stickiness factor, and the power of
context.

7. "The Law of the Few" is, as Gladwell states:
"The success of any kind of social epidemic is
heavily dependent on the involvement of
people with a particular and rare set of social
gifts." According to Gladwell, economists call
this the "80/20 Principle, which is the idea that
in any situation roughly 80 percent of the 'work'
will be done by 20 percent of the participants"
The Law of the Few
8. Ideas have to spark interest before they are
spread. Therefore, Malcolm explains that an
idea needs to include something special or
catchy. Your idea will need to stand out from
mundane daily information. Even the smallest
detail can make a big difference in how likely it
is that the idea will stick.

9. There are several crucial factors
that play a role in triggering
epidemics. They are easy to
recognize and can be consciously
used to spread ideas, products or
behaviours.

10. What sorts of people have the most
influence on the spread of ideas?
A certain few key people are often the cause
of epidemics.
Ideas spread particularly fast with
―Connectors,‖ or people with a vast social
network.
Some people are born with the gift of
persuasion and a knack for selling ideas.
In every network there are ―Mavens‖ who
amass information and pass it on to others.

11. An idea has to stick before it can spread.
•External circumstances have a much greater influence
on our behaviour than we think.
•Even the smallest changes in a context can determine
whether an epidemic takes off.
―IF YOU WANT TO BRING A FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE IN
PEOPLE‘S BELIEF AND BEHAVIOR…YOU NEED TO
CREATE A COMMUNITY AROUND THEM, WHERE
THOSE NEW BELIEFS CAN BE PRACTICED AND
EXPRESSED AND NURTURED.‖
Factors that play a part in spreading ideas
12. ―The tipping point is
that magic moment
when an idea, trend,
or social behaviour
crosses a threshold,
tips, and spreads like
wildfire.‖
―To be someone‘s best friend
requires a minimum investment
of time. More than that, though,
it takes emotional energy. Caring
about someone deeply is
exhausting.‖
―Emotion is
contagious.‖
―Acquaintances, in sort,
represent a source of
social power, and the more
acquaintances you have
the more powerful you
are.‖
―Look at
the world around you. It may
seem like an immovable
place.
It is not. With
the slightest push—in just the
right place—it can be tipped.‖
