This happened to the wife of James Fallows, bureau chief for the Atlantic Monthly, in April, 2011. She lost over 4 GBs of data. Now, she was eventually able to get it back because her husband knew Eric Schmidt, but most of us aren’t so lucky. This story is important because it highlights one of the problems caused by this massive transition from having our data locally, on devices we own, to data created and stored far away on someone else’s servers, we all face this risk. Hundreds of millions of us have important personal data in Gmail, Facebook, and other cloud applications that aren’t under our control. If something happens to that data, we don’t have a backup.http://www.wired.com/cloudline/2011/10/gmail-nightmare-even-if-its-in-the-cloud-you-still-have-to-back-it-up/
These dangers are not isolated to consumers. Business adoption of the cloud is growing faster all the time. While it would be inconvenient to lose your personal emails and all your Facebook activity, businesses that lose mission critical data about customers, partners, and finances, could be crushed.(Mention Microsoft BPOS outage – May 16th, 2011)
Most SaaS providers have very good disaster recovery capabilities, but those capabilities are designed to protect them from disasters that impact them, not disasters that impact you. One third of all data loss is plain old user error, and that doesn’t go away when you move to the cloud. Add to that the potential for hacked accounts and malicious insiders and you have a real need for a secure second copy of your cloud based data. And that is exactly what Backupify provides.
