1. THE PATH TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE WORLD
The path toa more sustainable planetisahottheme inthe mindsof worldleadersinall spheresof life andrightly
so. The big questionishowdo we achieve thisina practical way? Well, itstarts at the individual level forsociety
itself is a sum of the actions of the individuals in the community, nation and the world. Yes, the world is
increasinglybecoming a society hence the rising popularity of the term a global village. The good news is, if we
get it right at the individual level we will have a more prosperous and sustainable planet. The bible provides us
with practical guidance to achieving this at the individual level. It says in Joshua 1:8 – This book of the law shall
not departfrom yourmouth, but you shall meditate initdayand night, that youmay observe todo according to
all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
The bible indeed provides answers to our burning questions and aspirations. I must say there is a spiritual
perspective to a lot of the information we receive though some may not be aware of this fact. For instance,
sometimesIreceiveemailsnotifyingme of “debts”Ineednotpay.Inreality, inthe physical Idonotowe anydebts
but can the same be saidin the spiritual? Doyousometimesgetsimilaremailsorare youin some wayaware of a
huge debt you owe spiritually? To begin with, everyone who has not accepted the Lord Jesus as their personal
Lord and savior is a debtor spiritually. Unfortunately, this is not a debt that can be paid with our own works no
matterhow hard we workor try. The goodnewsis, the price has alreadybeenpaidovertwothousandyearsago
on the cross of Calvary by the Lord Jesus Christ and has been made available to the whole of mankind by the
Father as a free gift of salvation. Yes, it is absolutely free.
Furthermore,Iam alsoaware that similardebtsdoarise as a resultof our actionsespeciallywithregardstohow
we treat the planet and people. From a people perspective that is why the bible tells us faith works by love
(Galatians 5:6). For those who have accepted God’s precious gift, the price paid by our Lord on the cross is far
more than enough for us. However, is this a justifiable reason to ignore these debts? The bible provides good
insightsin1st
Corinthians3:11– 15 – For nootherfoundationcananyone laythanthatwhichislaid,whichisJesus
Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation withgold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s
work will become manifest;for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealedby fire; and the fire will test
each one’swork of what sort it is. If anyone’swork which he has builton it endures he will receive a reward. If
anyone’swork is burned,he will sufferloss;but he himselfwill be saved, yet so as through fire. How are we to
act with regards to the debt that arise as a result of how we treat the planet? We are to do the best we can to
take care of the planetwiththe knowledge we have pertime and our Fatherdefinitelyexpectsustoo. The bible
tellsusclearlythatthose whodie inthe Lord will rise andreignwithLordhere onearthfor a thousandyears (see
Revelation20). So to live a debt free live spiritually, the journeystarts with accepting God’s precious free gift of
