TR-069 is a technical specification that defines a common
communication protocol that enables broadband service
providers to remotely configure devices, enable

end-to-end delivery of new services, and

then manage and support those

devices and services.

Disruptive telco-TV strategies:
▪ Look beyond IPTV
▪ Bundle aggressively
▪ Target the low-end

Milestones of TR-069
The Story
■ A Broadband Forum technical specification - 1st published in 05-2004
■ To “manage” large-scale end-user devices (2) centrally from remote
■ Since this time constantly refined and enriched - Amendment 5, Version
1.4
■ End-user devices: IADs (router, modems, …) + devices in the home
■ To “manage”: to (re-) provision, to monitor, to support, to collect all
information available direct on the devices in the field
‹#›© Copyright Ovum 2015. All rights reserved.
The Past
■ A Broadband Forum technical specification - 1st published in 05-2004
■ With amendments in 06, 07, 10, 11 and Nov 13 to version 1.4
■ From 2004 to 2015 it evolved
- from static management of “fixed line DSL networks”
- to the de-facto standard protocol for large-scale network-independent
management of ALL kind of devices
- as an 'access agnostic' protocol, applicable across all types of access
operators.
Milestones of TR-069
‹#›© Copyright Ovum 2015. All rights reserved.
Milestones of TR-069
The Presence
■ Around 25% of all broadband lines worldwide - managed by TR-069!
■ We see nearly no green-field left nowadays - nearly all operators do run
to a certain extent an ACS-ecosystem
■ We see a very fast growing amount of device manufacturers enriching
their functionality with TR-069
■ We see in nearly all major device-tenders the request for TR-069
capability
■ TR-069 meanwhile endorsed by 3GPP, Small Cell forum, ITU, ETSI,
Home Gateway Initiative, WiMAX Forum, …
TR-069 made its way from DSL routers to all kind of IADs (routers,
gateways, modems, …) to the residential home (STBs, VoIP-boxes) to
Smart GWs and the Connected Home!

The role for TR-069
■ Designed for extensibility to new interfaces and new devices
■ Extends the use of
RPCs and Web
Services to all devices
in the pemise
■ Encourages Interop
via Data models
■ Strong security
framework
■ Conceived for
extreme scalability

What else the market is asking for ?
■ Further extend the adoption:
■ Constrained devices
■ Heterogeneous Networks
■ Increased support for Application Lifecycle Management
■ Multi-sided adoption model – no longer service provider centric
■ Improvements on notification:
■ Real time
■ Deterministic
■ Lightweight
