UBER IS FINDING RIGHT PARTNERS AND
SOLUTIONS FOR AN EARLY ENTRY IN THE
URBAN AIR MOBILITY MARKET
Uber Elevate has named
Jaunt Air Mobility its sixth
manufacturing partner for
urban air mobility (UAM)
vehicles in addition to Bell,
Embraer-X, Boeing’s Aurora
Flight Sciences, Pipistrel
Vertical Solutions and Karem
Aircraft.
One of Jaunt’s big selling
points — and something
that really got Uber involved
is the proprietary slowed-
rotor technology that this
start-up is integrating into its
vehicle. Acquired from Carter
Aviation, the technology is
key to enabling lift without
the excessive noise that
accompanies a traditional
helicopter’s rotors.
The slowed-rotor technology
gives Jaunt’s four wing-
mounted propellers an unusual
look: They’re curved to
maximize surface area without
the tip speed exceeding
450 feet per second. Jaunt’s
design also enables reverse-
thrust from the propellers and
improved low-speed agility.
Uber who considers noise one
of the major barriers to public
acceptance of such services
finds an acceptable and tried
solution in Jaunts design.
The other reason that Uber
has taken a chance on such
a young company is Jaunt’s
agreements in place for tip-to-
tail avionics with Honeywell
and structures with Triumph
Aerospace Structures. The
support of established,
experienced companies made
Uber feel more comfortable
that Jaunt knows what it is
doing and is set up for success.
Honeywell, which is also
providing UAM avionics for
Uber partner Pipistrel and for
Eviation, Vertical Aerospace
and Volocopter, has adapted
navigation systems, radios,

collision avoidance, flight
management computers
displays and other
connectivity solutions for the
UAM market. The biggest
— metaphorically is its fly-
by-wire offering, where the
company has shrunk the
same system used on Boeing
jets to the size of a book.
The weight saving afforded
by offloading the mechanical
components they replace,
allows an electric vertical-
takeoff-and-landing (eVTOL)
vehicle to hold the necessary
payload to carry passengers,
and the automation enabled
provides a realistic roadmap
to the ultimate goal of
unmanned operation
What Honeywell does for
the inside, Triumph does
for the outside of the so-
called compound aircraft.
Triumph is evolving from the
manufacture of heavy metals
like on the outside of a Boeing
jet to thermoplastics. Triumph
has the ability to scale those
moldable thermoplastics,
which can meet the needs
of the UAM market at a
light-enough weight, up into
automobile-like production
rates at an attractive price
point.
Battery plans aren’t clear
yet, but they will be working
with Honeywell, which just
announced a partnership
with Japanese automotive
manufacturer Denso to
develop propulsion systems,
and Uber, which poached
Tesla’s top battery expert,
Celina Mikolajczak, at the
start of last year. The battery
component of the eVTOL is
critical to longevity and cost.
At a maximum, Uber wants
an hourly operating cost of
$700 or less, more than one-
third less than the cheapest
single-engine helicopters to
make it marketable.

Safran too wants a piece of Air Taxi Business
We have real time access to complete inventory for all series of
King Air, Beech Craft, Hawker and Cessna Aircraft.
Safran is designing cabins for
Uber air taxis which is a bit
unusual as Uber Elevate is not in
the business of manufacturing
aircraft. It’s similar to the
approach Uber has taken with its
vehicle manufacturing partners:
Uber explains its mission
— albeit with some pretty
specific requirements and some
preferences on how it thinks
those requirements are best
met — and lets manufacturers
come to it with proposals. Then
Uber chooses the ones it likes
and can realistically meet its
requirements.
In the instant case Uber has
defined a very high-level vehicle
mission, and had asked Safran
to deliver a cabin to support
it. What that means is rather
than demanding door handles
in a specific place, windows
of a certain size or seats of a
particular material, Uber wanted
a good experience that would
achieve its goals and left Safran
free to decide the solution.
Despite the fact that Uber will
never be buying Safran’s cabins,
the arrangement, connects it
with aircraft manufacturers,
who will eventually build air
taxis positions its cabin designs
to meet their needs. To that
end, Safran has developed
a cabin with modularity
and a fairly generic air taxi
platform in mind, which can
easily be customizable for any
manufacturer’s needs.
Safran designed coach-style doors
that open away from the B pillar
under the wing, which is intended
to provide an open, inviting
appearance, Savian said. The rear
door portal extends far enough
back to provide access to the
storage area without passengers
needing to go around to a separate
trunk.
Because these vehicles are likely
to fly at between 1,200 and
1,500 feet, a premium was put on
windows as the view of the ground
will be the real attraction. Besides,
riders will still be in data range at
that altitude, so passengers can
check email and stream content on
their personal mobile devices while
airborne.

Mitsubishi launches ‘SpaceJet’
aircraft ahead of Paris Air Show
Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation
officially announced its
Mitsubishi SpaceJet family of
aircraft June 13 ahead of the
Paris Air Show. SpaceJet is the
commercial name for the product
family that includes the SpaceJet
M90 (previously known by the
developmental designation of
MRJ90) and a new member, the
SpaceJet M100, a new regional
jet.
The Mitsubishi SpaceJet family
of aircraft is designed to
address demand in the under
served regional jet market by
delivering comfort for passengers
and performance with more
profit potential for airlines. The
company will debut the SpaceJet
M100 cabin interior at the Paris
Air Show.
Having evolved from a concept
study for the now retired MRJ70
designation, the SpaceJet M100
is designed to adapt to specific
market needs while maintaining
strength of performance. The
SpaceJet M100 is perfectly
matched to the United States and
global markets alike. In the U.S.
market, the aircraft is optimized

in the 65-76 seat, three-class
cabin configuration. It can also
be flexibly configured for other
global market needs up to 88
seats single class, with industry
leading operating economics
throughout the full range of
configurations. Leveraging the
SpaceJet M90’s clean-sheet
design, the SpaceJet M100
similarly offers unmatched
emissions and noise reduction
and exceeds all the latest ICAO
environmental standards.

Airlines in India are capitalising on
the opportunity to add more flights
and increase fares as debt-laden Jet
Airways remains grounded, which
could help the aviation industry
turn profitable this year.Indian
airlines are quickly raising capacities
to make up for the supply deficit
in the wake of the cessation of
operations by Jet Airways.
Jet was India’s second largest
airlines, covering more than 60
destinations across the country
and abroad. It had a fleet of 119
planes but burdened with more
than $1 billion in debt, it was
forced to suspend all flights in
April as lenders refused to provide
additional funding.
Jet’s nemesis came in the wake
of fierce competition in India’s
aviation sector, which forced it to
slash fares to compete with budget
carriers. The lower fares made it
difficult for the company to cover
its high operating costs, including
fuel and taxes, in what has been a
challenging environment for all of
India’s airlines considering the high
cost of aviation fuel and taxes in
India.
