Editor's Notes
Goal: Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables
Our target user group would be tertiary students with issue of acne. We chose this target group because research has shown that they are more conscious about their looks which might be affecting their self esteem. We believe that this group of students are also unaware of the effects of what they are eating on their acne problems. Appearance MotivationAppearance motivation was assessed with 12 items drawn from the literature (Cash, 1990; Wichstrom, 1994; Hillhouseet al., 2000). Individuals were asked to indicate on five-point Likert-type response format whether they agreed or disagreed with statements pertaining to their motivation to develop and maintain an attractive appearance (e.g. `It is important that others view me as physically attractive', `How I look is important to me', I spend what others consider a large amount of time on my appearance daily'). This scale evidenced good internal reliability (coefficient α = 0.87) and is uncorrelated with measures of social desirability. Thus, individuals with stronger appearance motivation should have more positive attitudes toward our app as a means to improve one's attractiveness, and subsequently more positive intentions and behavioral tendencies toward increased consumption of fruits and vegetables. http://her.oxfordjournals.org/content/15/4/405.fullLack of nutritional knowledgeGrounded on the basis that young adults these days are lacking in nutrition knowledge. We realized that they do not know the benefits or rationale behind eating particular kinds of fruits and vegetables, and hence do not translate them to any form of action.Beach, J., Briggs, C., Shahrani, S., and Elliott, C. 2006. ActivitiesDue to hectic schedules, students consume unhealthy food like fast food. It is problematic when they do not think of the consequences when doing so.ContextWhen the students see their acne issues surfacing, they will feel inferior when they look into the mirror or socializing with their peers etc. They do not see the direct cause and effect of their unhealthy eating that is affecting their skin conditions.

Based on the problem we mention above, we decided to develop a mobile app to …..There are various tabs in the app. This is the once off start up screen to input their personal data.
For privacy reasons, this is just a mock up for our app…Displays a enhanced image of the user to motivate consumption. The user adds food( fruits and veg) they have eaten in to a list ( ala online shopping cart) the preview of the fruit and vegetable will be shown –visually appealing and to identify. When they have finished input for the day, and a “traffic light status” will be shown. Red means that u are off track today. Then, the dietarian will be able to provide personalized feedback/suggestions on what other fruits or vegetables u shown consider consuming. The third screen is to help the users keep track of their progress and diet.
PrototypeInstead of testing the user interface, we test the user experience.
After the 3 days
Prototype learning pointsOne of our findings confirm the basis that our idea – it is not that young adults lack the concern with their nutritional intake but the knowledge of how each fruits and veg affect their condition. Therefore, we decided to add the dietarian component in our app to add additional nutritional knowledge.Post prototype QuestionsWill you continue to use this? Are you actually interested in the benefits of what you eat?If the info is easily available will it play a part in making choices?
The strength of this application is that it provides effective solutions for the problems faced by our target audience. Bridging the gap between cause and effect.Personalizationable to identify yourself with the virtual image.MotivatingPersonalized adviceEncourage consumption of fruits and vegetables.Eating rightEmpowering them with nutritional knowledge lifestyle change( long term)Focus: Long term
One of the facts that is not full proof about our application is that there are other factors such as physical activities, smoking could affect your skin conditions. We considered one of the opportunities to further develop our application to be an all rounded app.
