3. Who is Saint George?
Saint George is the patron saint of England.
His emblem is the flag of England.
He was born during the III Century A.D. (After
Christ Death) in the old Capadocia (nowadays
is Turkey). He was a brave Roman soldier who
protested against the Roman’s torture of the
Christians and died for his beliefs.
In the 12th century the emblem was on the
soldiers tunic to avoid confusion in battle.

There is a dragon who
terrorizes a town.
The people in town do a raffle
and the King’s daughter, a
young princess, is offered to
the dragon.
When George hears about
this he rides into the village.
George kills the dragon and
rescues the princess.
5. How does England celebrate Saint
George’s Day?
On the Sunday nearest to 23rd of April, scouts
and guides throughout England parade through
high streets and attend a special St George's
Day service at their local church.
By tradition is the day for a red rose in the
button hole, the national flower. It is not as
celebrated as St Patrick’s day.
For most people in England St George's Day is
just another ordinary working day.
In fact, more than a quarter of people living in
England do not even know who their patron
saint is!

What does it mean?
The flag has got a red
cross of a martyr in the
middle on a white
background.
The colours mean:
White: peace and honesty
Red: hardiness, bravery,
strength and valour.
7. Who is the famous Englishman who was born
and died on April 23rd? And what famous
Spanish writer died the same day as well?
Shakespeare was born on 23rd of April 1564 and
he died on the same day in 1616.
Miguel de Cervantes died on the 23rd of April.
That is why we commemorate his death.

8. What day is the 23rd of April?
It’s Saint George’s Day.
In 1923 a writer from Valencia, Vicens Clavell, chooses
this day to give a book in Saint George’s Day because
Cervantes and Shakespeare dead that day.
In 1995 Unesco chooses that day to become the
International Day of the Book. This is to promote
reading, publishing and copyright.
A Golf cup is celebrated during that day.
