33. 02 PETROCHEMICALS
34
INDUSTRIAL PROFILE
In the petrochemical industry,
hydrocarbons are cracked in tube
systems. This creates the basic building
blocks for a very wide variety of
chemical products.
The most important requirements for
the materials used are high creep
strength and corrosion resistance. The
classical methods are steam cracking
and steam reforming.

STEAM CRACKERS
Steam crackers are so-called pyrolysis
furnaces in which liquid and/or
gaseous feedstocks are mixed with
steam in convection tube bundles and
split into ethylene, propylene and
valuable by-products in the
combustion chamber of the furnace.

CHALLENGE
Because of the pyrolysis
reaction, thermally insulating
hydrocarbon is deposited on
the tube walls, so reducing the
effective cross-sectional area.
To ensure a constant mass flow
through the plant, the furnace
temperature must be raised
continuously. Regular decoking
of the furnaces is therefore
necessary.

Due to the special composition
of this alloy, a dense and self-

during the running up of the

effective in reducing the

43
STEAM REFORMERS
Steam reformers are so-called
primary reformer furnaces. In them,
a methane/steam mixture is led
through hundreds of vertical,
externally heated spun cast pipes.
This produces synthesis gas, a
mixture of carbon monoxide and
hydrogen, plus valuable by-products.

46
CHALLENGE
Reaction gases at 450 - 650°C
and pressures of 30 to 45
bar(g) are led through the
reformer tubes that are filled
with catalyst and heated to
800 - 900°C. This makes the
tubes especially susceptible to
so-called material creep.

achieve a unique creep

50. 03 STEEL PRODUCING INDUSTRY
53
INDUSTRIAL PROFILE
In the steel industry, steel is produced
from iron ore and further processed to
hot strip, forged parts, sheet, wire and
tubes.
As market leader in the spun casting
tubing sector for direct reduction
plants, we provide you with
components that are able to meet the
special requirements of this industry.
Schmidt + Clemens | Customer or reason | 29/10/2015
51. 03 STEEL PRODUCING INDUSTRY - DRI
54
DRI REFORMERS
Direct reduction plants are an integral
part of steel works. In them, iron-rich
ores are reduced by hydrogen-rich gas
using the counterflow method. This
results in intermediates for steel
production such as sponge iron or pig
iron. There are two well-known
processes for this – MIDRIX and HyL.
Schmidt + Clemens | Customer or reason | 29/10/2015
52. PROBLEMS
03 STEEL PRODUCING INDUSTRY - DRI
56
CHALLENGE
The high and cyclical changes
in working temperature as well
as the corrosive environment
produce an enormous loading
on the material.
A particular problem is so-
called metal dusting. Carbon
reacts with the pipe material
and the solid metal turns into
metal dust.

ENORMOUS DEMANDS
The extreme loading due to
corrosion places enormous
demands on the materials used in
the production of oil and gas.
We master this challenge using our
corrosion resistant standard and
special alloys for the onshore and
offshore sectors.

58. STRESS CORROSION CRACKING
04 ONSHORE AND OFFSHORE
63
CORROSION
Safety is the number one priority
in the offshore and onshore
industries. The corrosion risks are
however on the increase:
• More acidic oil and gas fields
• Higher temperatures
• Increasing deep-sea pressures
Our high corrosion-resistant
duplex, super-duplex and nickel-
based alloys provide you with the
necessary safety.
Carbon steel is susceptible to
sulphide-induced stress corrosion
cracking. The material surface
reacts with hydrogen sulphide
which leads to brittleness and
subsequent failure due to crack
formation.
Schmidt + Clemens | Customer or reason | 29/10/2015
59. THE S+C SOLUTION
04 ONSHORE AND OFFSHORE
64
The passivating inner surface of
our tubes prevents reactions
between the hydrogen sulphide
and so ensures complete
protection against corrosion, even
under extreme conditions.
