Lost in transition: digital resources and university strategies

This is the JRC-IPTS invited presentation on policy recommendations for mainstreaming ICT-enabled learning innovations at VISIR International Seminar (25-26 March, Committee of Regions, Brussels). Short description: Technologies for learning are considered as key enablers of educational innovation. However, their full potential is not being realised in formal education settings and major questions are being asked about the sustainability, systemic impact and mainstreaming of ICT-enabled learning innovations (ICT-ELI) in Europe. This presentations focuses on recommendations for immediate strategies and actions to be undertaken by policy-makers at local, regional, national, and EU level to further develop and mainstream ICT-ELI with systemic impact, contributing to the modernisation of Education and Training systems in Europe. The recommendations were developed in the context of the 'Up scaling Creative Classrooms in Europe (SCALE CCR) project, carried out by JRC-IPTS on behalf of the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, based on desk research; case reports from Europe and Asia; continuous stakeholders consultations; and in-depth expert interviews. The final set of recommendations was further validated and prioritised through an online consultation with 149 educational stakeholders. The recommendations were clustered into seven areas presenting a holistic agenda to guide the further development and mainstreaming of ICT-ELI: Content and Curricula; Assessment; School Staff Professional Development; Research; Organisation and Leadership; Connectedness; and Infrastructure. The number and variety of the recommendations provided depict the complexity of ICT-ELI and the systemic approach needed for their mainstreaming across Education and Training systems in Europe.

The premise is that e-education (digital pedagogy and training) can become a strategic tool for European universities, enabling them to be pedagogically more effective, more cost-effective, more attractive and able to meet the needs of the professional world with regard to youth training and life-long learning. This webinar focused on a comparative survey between Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom on public digital policies and Dr. Szucs presented an overview on the business models for opening up education – Sustainability of MOOCs, OER and related online education approaches in higher education in Europe. The presentation also aimed to answer the question of whether Open Educational Resources are a lever for digital transition of higher education.

If the claims about both are true, how can we ensure we use data and AI well? And what does it mean for the very things which make us human - our feelings? In this workshop Carole will draw on material from her ground-breaking book, Neuroscience for Project Success: why people behave as they do to answer both questions. “We like to think our decision making is completely rational. However, once there's an element of uncertainty, conscious assessments are only part of the story. Two other inputs, both subconscious and driven by our innate need to survive, have a big impact. One, automatic reactions driven by cognitive biases, gets plenty of airtime. The other input, our raw visceral emotions might be scary to talk about and less understood - but that’s not a reason to pretend they don’t exist!” This interactive workshop will draw on material from Carole’s book, Neuroscience for Project Success: why people behave as they do, published by APM in 2022. Project Management can be challenging at times, we all need the ability to keep going when things are not going to plan. This event was held on 19 March 2024. By attending this session you learned how you can enhance your ability to apply a range of techniques and tools to improve the management of emotions under stress, make more effective decisions in difficult scenarios and manage their energy more effectively in stressful situations. This workshop helped you to enhance your ability to deal positively with shifting situations by exploring different approaches to change and uncertainty. You developed techniques to either accept or influence situations by adjusting your thinking, behaviours and actions along the way in order to enhance your ongoing quality and experience of life. Objectives of the session: Understand yourself and your behaviours in stressful situations (recognising the signs of mental health, impact of stress on the body and what triggers this for you) Manage your emotions and mindsets, recognising thought cycles Manage the impact of difficult situations and resilience via the understanding and use of theoretical models.
