1. Main Image – Before I edited the main image it had a dull, grey background
which would look odd compared to the rest of my magazine. In order to
remove the background, I used the ‘quick selection tool’ which allows me to
highlight the areas that I want to keep. By reversing the selection the irrelevant
sections are selected, so that I can delete them. This revealed a transparent
background, so that I could place my main image in front of a white
background, which is conventional for the cover of a magazine.
Cover lines – In order to make the
red text stand out from the white,
I applied an effect to the text. I did
this by using the ‘score’ effect,
which acts like a shadow/outline.
Therefore, this makes the text
clearer and easier to read, so that
from a distance it would be clearly
identified as a magazine cover.
Background – The background is
plain white, as this is what is
typically used on magazine covers.
Although it does not create mise-
en-scene, it does not clash with
the main image. Also, white is part
of my colour scheme that I have
used throughout my magazine. A
clear colour scheme is important,
as it helps develop a house style.
This house style should be
suitable for the target audience;
thus, I used colours chosen by
target audience in my
questionnaire and focus group.
Graphics – Often magazines will
use graphics in order to highlight
text. Therefore, by using the
‘shape’ tool I created an oval to
use as a background for one of
the cover lines. The contrast
between the red and black makes
the text easier to identify, so that
even from a distance the cover
will still be recognised as part of a
magazine.
Main cover line – I used a similar font to the other
cover lines, as font style is one of the key elements to
forming a house style. The house style is an
important way of engaging the target audience with
the magazine. Yet, to make it clear that the text is the
main cover line I used the ‘character’ tool which can
be used when editing text to make it bold and larger.
Thus, the codes and conventions of magazine design
demonstrate that the main cover line should be
bigger than the other cover lines and should support
the main image.
