- For the Libraries, it was important for us to understand who JTRP was and what their mission and goals were in regards to their research dissemination methods, so that we could tailor our services and engagement activities to their specific needs.In February of 2013 an “All-hands” meeting was held within the Libraries to discuss the existing Libraries relationship with JTRP and to explore how we could build on this relationship using PURR. During this meeting we concluded that we needed to approach the JTRP group to make them aware that:A new repository for data at Purdue existed and was available to them.The Libraries are willing and able to work with JTRP to leverage PURR for the publication of their technical report research data.Our Goals:Identification of use case (Dr. Varma and Sohn)Prototype a workflow where discrete but related JTRP data and JTRP technical reports are linked, enabling greater discovery and reuse.Expose data to demonstrate compliance with good research data management practice and meet funding agency requirements and Federal government directives.Provide an example of an integrated scholarly and data publication workflow.
- Purdue recognized the early need to develop distinct repositories that were focused on the specific and unique needs of content ranging from archival materials, traditional institutional repository materials, and data. Three distinct institutional repositories: e-Archives, which is our traditional archival repository; and the Purdue e-Pubs and PURR.Purdue e-Pubs: Purdue e-Pubs repository is the traditional institutional repository of Purdue University as well as an online publishing platform for the Libraries Publishing division.Include journal articles in post-print and publisher’s PDF formats, as well as other non-traditionally published materials such as gray literature, technical reports, conference proceedings, theses and dissertations, posters, presentations, and audio/visual materials.PURR:The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR) is a research collaboration and data management repository that gives researchers a space to collaborate on research and publish datasets online. Examples of research data may include spreadsheets, instrument or sensor readings, software source code, surveys, interview transcripts, or images and audiovisual files.
- With the evolution of the publication workflow and libraries based service models, the Libraries has been able to provide JTRP a means to evolve their dissemination activities from a model that had a limited amount of visibility and presence… To now a model with an increased global presence and dissemination capability through the implementation of…Better management of production and collection processes and activities for JTRP contentBetter management and structure for dissemination purposes (JTRP Collection and Series)Increased visibility for access and discoverability through the employment of Open Archival Initiative or OAI, Google Scholar indexing, and RSS feeds interlinking their personal web-presence to their collection in Purdue e-Pubs. - What does PURR mean for researchers and for our use case?PURR meets the previously unmet need for the publication of datasets as unique scholarship.PURR enables the publishing of data with a DOI allowing for its unique identification, reuse, verifiability, while increasing citability and impact factor.PURR makes data easier to cite by presenting the user with a preferred citation format and the ability to exportable citations (Bibtex, Endnote). In total PURR provides a solution for the entire research data management life cycle which utilizes a subject specialist library liaison-centered service model.

- This diagram formalizes how we publish and interlink data with scholarship by aligning the JTRP-Purdue e-Pubs and PURR work flows: The work flows operate parallel at three points, when:1. data management plan is created, 2. the DOI is minted with PURR3. and finally at the point of the final metadata creation. 1. The workflow requires the early identification of researchers who are submitting technical reports that contain data to provide PURR education and support. 2. The PI packages, describes, and publishes a dataset with a DOI using PURR. The approved PURR dataset DOI(s) are then submitted to the Press-JTRP production editor for inclusion in the technical report. 3. The final direct point of communication occurs in the metadata creation stage where links are established between the e-Pubs publication record and the PURR dataset record. The DOIs for each resource are used to provide links to the related resource(s) in the otherRepository. The result is the creation of a comprehensive linked scholarly publication package containing open data and open access scholarship.
- Now let’s circle back to our use-case to understand this workflow in action.In my earlier slide I outlined the four actions that needed to be taken:1. Identify use case:Working with our JTRP collaborators we identified two Civil Engineers Dr. Amit Varma and Phd candidate YoungmooSohn who were working on a technical report that contained video data: “Effects of the Realistic Straightening Repair on the Properties and Serviceability of Damaged Steel Beam Bridges.” 2. Stage datasets in PURR: I then worked with the JTRP Production editor (Kelley Kimm), and the authors to stage the 10 datasets in PURR. 3. Format Tech Report:Once the dataset DOIs were assigned the JTRP production editor inserted them into the draft technical report….
- 4. Finalize PURR and Purdue E-Pubs repository records:In this final step both metadata linking the tech report to datasets and vice-verca were added to the PURR and E-pubs resource records.This slide demonstrates the linkages:The Purdue e-Pubs “recommended citation” is provided in the “Citations” tab of the PURR record.The PURR “Cite this work” recommendation is included in the “Comments” field of the Purdue e-Pubs record.”
- The fruits of our labours: An integrated scholarship package comprised of a fully formatted tech report containing links to its underlying video data and video datasets containing links to the tech report it supports.
