3. 2014 ARTBA National Convention 3
The hotel for this year’s September
7-9 ARTBA National Convention
is very special. The picture on the
opposite page should be
motivating enough for you to
register now!
Rancho Palos Verdes, the home
of Terranea Resort, takes its name
from Cañada de Palos Verdes or
“canyon of green trees,” and was
originally inhabited by the
Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe. The
Terranea is nestled along one of
Southern California’s most scenic
and coveted coastlines
overlooking the Pacific Ocean
and Catalina Island. It features
eight dining experiences, a
full-service spa and fitness center,
an award-winning golf course and
three swimming pools.
Beyond the seaside location,
the program is also filled with
meaningful sessions. The ARTBA
government affairs and
economics teams will update you
on the current situation with the
Highway Trust Fund and the
reauthorization of MAP-21, and
provide a construction market
conditions report and an early
forecast for 2015.
We will hear from a very
unusual speaker with a powerful
and inspiring story. Gunnar
Hanson, a decorated former Navy
Seal turned pastor, nearly threw all
of his accomplishments away
during one stupid night. Now
known as “Pastor Gunnar,” he will
discuss some of his personal losses,
and the lessons learned from
them, and share the keys to his
perseverance.
Initiated last year in Milwaukee
and back by popular demand
is the “State of the Transportation
Construction Industry” panel
discussion with key industry
executives sharing their
perspectives on “big picture”
issues ahead.
The spouses will visit the
Hollywood Walk of Fame, Beverly
Hills, Rodeo Drive, and the
world-famous Getty Museum.
Finally, we host a September 9
dinner to install 2014-15 Chairman
Nick Ivanoff of New York-based
Ammann & Whitney. At the event,
our old friend and veteran
Hollywood comedian Larry Miller,
who had us laughing at the 2007
and 2011 conventions, will return
for an encore performance.
A pristine venue… substantive
sessions… and a little taste of
Hollywood. All good reasons why
we hope you and your spouse or
significant other join us this
September!

“Leadership & Life Lessons
Learned” from a U.S. Navy Seal
Gunnar Hanson, Former Navy Seal
and Pastor, Valley Baptist Church
U.S. Navy Seal training is so brutal
that fewer than 20 percent of
candidates actually finish the
course.
Gunnar Hanson was one of the
few chosen, but then nearly
blew his accomplishments away
one foolish night. Fortunately, he
learned to use his past as a bridge
to help others when his heart,
mind and life were unshackled.
Now known as “Pastor Gunnar,”
he will highlight his training
experience, discuss some of the
personal losses he faced during
war and the lessons learned from
them.
Gunnar served in the U.S.
Navy from July 1993 to March
2005, when he was honorably
discharged. He is grateful for the
lifelong friends and memories in
the SEAL teams as they were used
to shape him into the man he is
today.
FEATURED SPEAKER
In May 2007, Gunnar was invited
to revitalize Valley Baptist Church
in Valley Center, California. After
much prayer, Gunnar with the sup-
port of his wife, Anna, took a leap
of faith and decided to take on
the mission God had placed be-
fore them. Pastor Gunnar wasted
no time getting involved in the
community taking advantage of
every opportunity to serve. He also
volunteers as Escondido Police
Department chaplain.
Following his service in the Navy,
he earned a B.A. in Biblical Stud-
ies and a Master’s of Divinity from
Southern California Seminary. He
has also completed doctoral work
at Midwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary.
He is currently writing his first
book: “SEAL Pastor—One Man’s
Journey Reconciling Faith and
Force,” which is scheduled to be
completed later this year.
Gunnar and Anna have been
married since 2002. They are the
proud and happy parents of four

career with a memorable scene
alongside Richard Gere and Julia
Roberts in the blockbuster film
“Pretty Woman.” He has since
gone on to unforgettable roles in
such films as “The Princess Diaries”
and “The Nutty Professor.” His
numerous television credits include
the hit shows such as “Medium,”
“Burn Notice, “Law & Order” and
“Seinfeld.” He’s made dozens of
appearances on “The Tonight
Show” and “The Late Show with
David Letterman.”

grand ballroom, a squash court and even a small hospital. For a period of time during World War II, she
was transformed into a troopship. The Queen Mary was the grandest ocean liner in the world carrying
