Yes, Malaysian could graduate from a University free of charge. The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia
(SPM) results is expected to be released in few weeks’ time, students and parents now have
to consider their tertiary education options.

Which Universities Offers Zero Tuition Fees in Germany?
In 2014, Germany’s 16 states abolished tuition fees for undergraduate students at all public
German universities; meaning that both domestic and international undergraduates at public
universities in Germany can study for free. International students only need to pay a fee of
€1500 each semester if they are studying at a public university in the state of Baden-
Württemberg. In all other public universities outside of Baden-Württemberg, there are no tuition
fees. Students will only need to pay for semester contribution of about €200 each semester
and for their own living expenses. This adds up to a similar cost of education in a private
university in Malaysia.
What is the Cost of Living?
The average cost of living is about €850 (~RM3,800) a month, it is no wonder that Germany is
a prime destination for students looking to pursue a higher education.

What are the Pathway for SPM Leavers to enter German Universities?
Students start their journey by enrolling to one of the recognized pre-university programmes
such as the A level. One particular programme is the A level with German language at
Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL).
Students will start learning German parallel to their A level and will achieve the intermediate
level of proficiency by the end of their A level. After completing their A level, students will
continue learning German up to level C1 which is the usual requirement to study in German-
taught courses.
The final phase of the preparation program is done in Germany whereby students get to spend
3 to 6 months to practice the language in Germany as well as have sufficient time to adapt to
the culture and to living in Germany. Students will spend a total of 2 to 2.5 years to complete
their pre-u and German language classes.
Can Students Work to Cover their Cost of Living?
Students are allowed to work part-time up to 120 full-days or 240 half-days. In addition to this,
most students are required to intern for one semester and they will receive a generous
allowance of about €700 to €950 on top of the working experience. Students can also opt to
do their Bachelor thesis (final year project) at a company and receive an allowance.
What is Blocked Account?
Foreign students must prove that they can cover their living expenses while studying in
Germany and the blocked account is one of the most reliable ways to do so. Students deposit
€10236 into a German bank account and when they are in Germany, they will receive €853
monthly until that amount is used up. The blocked account will usually need to be renewed
yearly, right before students extend their study visa.
Are there any other Country offering Free Tertiary Education?
Oh yes, in Europe, apart from Germany, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Czech Republic
offer high-quality tertiary education tuition-free even to international students. Having said that,
courses will be conducted in the country's native language and students will have to master
the language first.
