2. Workshop Overview
In this workshop, we will create purpose statements for our network
through writing, speed dating, and making. We will begin by jotting
down ideas that will be visualized during dates. We will refine writing
in response to what is made.
5. METHOD 1
Speed dating
Speed dating as a design activity, is similar
to the familiar social process. In design, it is
a method for talking and exchanging ideas
with each other, moving from one person to
another, for a certain amount of time.

- Be patient and listen
- Speak clearly
- Be open to new ideas
7. METHOD 2
Rapid modeling
It is a method to visualize your ideas, quickly
and intuitively using basic everyday items,
as way to express and discuss each others
concepts.

- Interpret through making
- Don’t be hypercritical of what you make,
just express yourself
- The more creative the better
10. Gather Materials
Gather a few modeling and
diagramming supplies from
around your house/studio.
These wil be used for modeling
during your speed date.
Suggested items include: paper,
markers, tape, tinfoil, etc.
11. Skype Setup
Since we will be using skype to
communicate during our speed dates
you will need to make sure to:
+ Sign into Skype
+ heck your schedule to find your

dates and their Skype User Names
+
Add those User Names to your
Contacts in Skype
12. Complete Quick Writing
You will be creating a draft Purpose
Statement for our network. You will need
to complete the quick writing exercise
shown within the instruction page.
The responses to these questions will be
used during your speed date.

14. In each of your three speed
dates you will:
1. TRADE: Trade answers from a part of your quick writing
exercise.
(Trade by copying your response in the Skype message
feature of your video call.)
2. MODEL: Interpret your date’s response by modeling and
diagramming with your toolkit.
3. DISCUSS: Show your date what you made and discuss.

have speed dates with please consult
your personal schedule or contact the
proposium remote liason through Skype.

each date.
+ Refine your writing based on the
feedback, and the modeling exercises.
+ Upload a proposed name for our
network and a finalized purpose
statement in the comment box on the
