A Senior’s Guide to a New Living Environment
LTC 315 Alternative Living Environments
Handbook for Elderly Individuals, Their Family and Caregiver
Providing assistance to elderly parents is a continuing concern for the members of
the family. They normally want to stay at home until the day they die. They
encounter a few issues in their lives and the lives of their children and other family
who provide assistance. These family members would look after them, do their
groceries, fix the roof, and deal with leaking pipes and faucet inside the kitchen or
bathroom. Someone may be needed to mow their lawn, clean up the backyard, or
contribute for the cost of these major jobs. It may be necessary to rake the leaves a
number of times each week since there are a good number of trees on their
property. This may mean over three hundred bags of leaves to be discarded each
season. The main concerns in this situation are who will take care of the job, and
how can they pay for the services rendered for the job. The elderly parents may
have to prepare to move into a nursing home for couples since they may not pay
for the expenses of staying in their own home. The nursing home is meant for
couples who are capable of doing daily personal tasks by themselves.
During this time, the members of the family may talk about cost and security while
the parents will continue to insist on being independent in the way they live their
lives. However, the parents will have to be relocated into an independent or an
assisted living facility. For the meantime, the members of the family will have to
check on the finances of the elderly parents to make sure that they are able to
afford to live in these types of facilities. The location of the facility will determine
whether the parents will move into the facility. The financial status of the location of
the facility will determine the expenses the elderly parents will incur should they
transfer into the facility. If the facility is located in a middle class community, the
cost for moving in will not be too expensive. However, if the location is a high-end
community, then the price of moving into the facility may be costly. These should
be considered together with the amount that insurance will cover and the amount
that they can afford. This will show whether finances will be a problem for them if
they decide to move into an assisted or independent living facility.
Medicaid, Medicare or Long-Term Care insurance can be used to pay a number of
these plans. Medicaid is a state-funded public assistance program for people who
have no healthcare or insurance. Medicare is a health care insurance provided by
the federal government. Long Term Care insurance provides payment for elderly or
chronically ill citizens for a number of care-giving programs. The individuals may
receive care in their own homes from a registered nurse or aide, or it can be
provided in a facility. Medicaid and Medicare provide significant support for a good
number of nursing homes residents. However, there are limits to the amounts it
pays, like providing payment for the initial one hundred days in the facility. The
limitations on the payments are strict. Nursing home expenses are not paid by the
disability insurance of an individual. Expenses will increase as more care is needed
by the resident.
People have the opportunity to prepare for the future, which may involve living in
an assisted or independent living facility. Therefore, they should make the
necessary research about the facilities that they can move into in the future. The
information may be for one person or a couple, and is essential to release any
uncertainties about the future. The health care facility required will depend on the
overall health requirements of the individual or couple. A number of significant
factors have to be considered to guarantee that the persons who will stay in the
facility will secure and continuous. One factor is the financing policy of the facility
and its capability of providing the services required by the resident. It may be
possible for the services provided to the resident will be delayed if the payment due
to the facility for the account of the resident is also delayed. If the payments are
delayed for a number of months, the resident may be compelled to move out of the
facility.
Our community has numerous nursing homes that offer various therapy services.
One facility offers a range of therapeutic services including respiratory and speech,
occupational therapy, and other kinds of services handled by therapists. Although
