Example of an Ethical Rule: “Thou shall not engage in
conversations about co-workers that are meant to hurt
them.”

the team grows in experience
and maturity the Disciplined
Leader begins to lessen the
amount of rules.
• Remember: Too many rules
will run off your best people;
too many standards will run
off your worst people.

many of your rules with standards.
Important: Always keep rules in
place for those things that are
governed by laws.

Example of an Organizational Rule: “Thou shall
process all move-outs in accordance with the law.”

Communication
The Disciplined Leader is someone that understands
how to empower through communication.

All communication falls into 1 of 3 categories:
1. “This is what I’ve done; I just want you to know.”
2. “This is what I’m going to do; I just want you to know.”
3. “What would you like me to do”


Communication
• Remember: How you speak to someone today dictates
how you can speak to them in the future.
• If you make someone feel foolish for offering a suggestion
that seems silly…they will be very reluctant to offer
suggestions in the future.
• If you chastise your team when they make a mistake they
will lose respect for you.
As the leader communication is on your terms.
Your team will change the terms by resigning.

Your team must know
When standards are consistently
missed there are consequences.
Before you take action
Always ask yourself this question,
“is this a direct result of
irresponsible behavior or rebellious
behavior?”
When it is a direct result of
irresponsible behavior you must
coach and train.

Discipline
Example: You walk an apartment that
is supposed to be ready and it isn’t.
You determine that the technician
doesn’t understand priorities, or time
management or the standard

You can’t discipline for this. You must
coach and train them on the priorities,
time management or the standards.


Discipline
When the standards are missed and it is a direct result
of rebellious behavior you must discipline.
Example: you walk the apartment and it isn’t
ready because the technician doesn’t care.

You cannot coach and train in this case.
You must discipline the technician.


Discipline
Remember: Never coach and
train when you should
discipline. Never discipline
when you should coach and
train.
o If you discipline when you
should coach and train you
are cruel.
o If you coach and train when
you should discipline you are a
joke as a leader.
Either way you are ineffective
as a leader.
