to be here,'". "Then I would just leave.

Bio: "It was because of the way that I am that
my mother, you know ... got rid of me—because
I'm a lesbian,”. Whitney's grandmother took her
in for some time, but even that was short-
lived: The emotional abuse she experienced
there became too much. "I can't be here
because it's really tearing me apart … I would
rather sleep outside than be here with my
family."

Bio: Covenant House is the largest privately funded
agency in the Americas providing shelter, food, immediate
crisis care, and an array of other services to homeless and
runaway youth. In addition to basic needs, Covenant House
provides care to homeless youth aged 14–20 (certain
locations care for youth as young as 13 & grown-ups as old as
24), designed to transition them into an independent
adulthood free from the risk of future homelessness.
