6. Issue Loss of wetlands Wetlands are an important habitat in Co.Monaghan and a major contributor to Monaghan’s biodiversity. Part of the character of a drumlin landscape is inter-drumlin wetlands. They act as flood buffers, water filters and as habitats for plants, invertebrates and birds. Development of a construction rubble / topsoil recycling scheme. Habitat survey of Co. Monaghan to determine types and extent of wetlands. Development of policies by MCC on development and wetlands. Awareness campaign on functions and value of wetlands. Training for MCC staff. Enforcement of legislation Infilling of interdrumlin and lakeshore wetlands. Lack of awareness of ecological, and hydrological value at public and local authority level. Illegal infilling without waste permit. Lack of appreciation. Inadequate enforcement of environmental legislation. Loss of flora and fauna associated with wetland habitats.
