– Boże Narodzenie w Portugalii– Boże Narodzenie w Portugalii
• Hello, friends from Poland! We are Rafael and
Ricardo from group 2 at the Project Class. As we
are getting in Christmas time we decided to send
you an e-mail talking about the way we celebrate it
over here; and we’re doing this for you to know our
country, Portugal!
• So; here in Portugal Christmas is very important,
and we have lots of old traditions. It is a time to be
with our families, or our friends, or maybe both.
Already in the beginning of December, we prepare
the Christmas tree, for us to fill it under with
presents during the all month (only until the
Christmas Eve). We also set up the crib; over here
we call it “Presépio”. On Christmas Eve, when all
the family is together, we eat a big dinner. We eat
cod fish with potatoes for main plate and many
traditional and tasty sweets for dessert. After
dinner, all the family gets together, and when the
clock rings midnight, everybody opens their
presents and happiness grows. Also on Christmas
Eve, many people go to the mass late in the
evening, which is called “Missa do Galo”.
• In Portugal, there are some organizations that
collect presents to give to the poor children. And
this year, a giant tree with 72 meters tall (the
biggest in Europe) is in Lisbon, for everyone to see
and enjoy. Now you know how Christmas is in
Portugal. What about in Poland? How is Christmas
over there?

• Dear Agnieszka,
• I was very happy to receive your letter.
• In these last eighteen days of February in
our country we celebrate Carnival.
• It’s a feast that comes before Lent and lasts
until Ash-Wednesday.
• In this period we dress up, dance and have
fun.
• For three Sundays and on the last Thursday
before Lent, children and adults wear masks
and go for the streets playing jokes and
carouse.
• A group of students of my school is dressed
up as the characters of the story “
THOUSAND AND ONE NIGHTS”. On
Tuesday afternoon they are participating to
a parade along the streets of my town.
• A famous proverb says :At Carnival each
fun worth
• I hope to hear from you soon. Love from
Ilenia

Poland lies in the central part of the European continent,
the geometrical centre of which is near Warsaw.
The boundary between the East and West
European continental masses also runs through
Poland. Poland's total surface area is 322,500 sq
km (312,600 sq km of land, 1,200 sq km of inland
waters, and 8,700 sq km of territorial waters).
The main part of the District of Dzierżoniów is situated in
Przedgórze Sudeckie. North- eastern mountains-
sides of the Sowie Mountains, a part of Ślęża
Massif, and Mount Radunia are also included in the
District’s area.
29. HISTORY OFDZIER ONIÓWŻHISTORY OFDZIER ONIÓWŻ
Rich history of Dzierżoniów is connected with
frequent changes of national and political
status. One can find here remembrances of the
Piast, Czech monarchs, Hapsburgs, or the
German nation. The beginnings of the town can
be traced back to the 13th
century. First reliable
written mention about the town appears on
February the 13th
1258. In the beginning of its
history the town is under the rule of the
Wrocław princes, then the Ziębice princes, and
in the end of this period it becomes one of the
leading focal points of the Świdnicko-Jaworskie
principality. In the 15th
century the area
gradually becomes dependent on the Czech
crown. The next century is associated with the
Husitian revolt when in the town, as well as the
rest of Lower Silesia, is plundered by the
crossings of the armed bands and devastated
by pestilence. In the 16th
century Dzierzoniów
gets under the Hapsburg rule again. Second
half of the same century and the beginning of
the 17th
century are sometimes called ‘the
golden age’ of the town. Propitious period is

SAINTGEORGESAINTGEORGE
Saint George – the patron of the town and at
the same time the patron of the oldest
town’s parish. He lived on the turn of the 3rd
and 4th
centuries. He served in the Roman
Emperor’s, Diocletian, army. When the
Emperor began cruel Christians
persecution, George revolted against it,
condemned idolatry and confessed his faith
in Jesus Christ in a loud voice. Angry
Emperor sentenced George for terrible
torture because of which George died on
April the 24th
303 AD. According to the
church tradition Saint George is depicted as
a knight on a horseback successfully
fighting with a dragon; that is why he is said
to be soldiers’ patron. The believers call his
help during spiritual struggles with the evil
strength, which was personified by the
dragon. A stamp with St. George killing the
dragon and the town walls in the
background is dated on 1290. This scene is
also included in Dzierżoniów coat-of arms.

The Church of The Immaculate

the church and the cloister of

architectural forms from the
similar rocky materials of the
city walls. During the
Reformation times it passes
under the city administration.
There are stored economic

function of an adoration church.
32. DEFENCEWALLSDEFENCEWALLS
Defence walls, park - Raised at the end of
the XIII century, when the city passed
under the rule of prince Świdnicko-
Jaworskich. Following these walls
from the Middle Ages were built two
castles: Książęcy (princely) and
Hummelschloss. In the XVII century
the walls became heavy-duty
terrestrial earthworks on which the
XIX century founded a municipal park.
Over the time, it was decorated with
monuments for the remembrance of
those killed for Dzierżoniów, with
specimens of unique trees, fountains,
and also small architecture, eg. with
portals from rebuilt municipal
tenements. Two towers in the south
part were reconstructed by the
Sadebecks familly. In the Northern
part of the fortifications among two
towers in 1928 was built the “bar
mleczny” (milk bar, canteen).
