These slides accompanied a June 4th, 2016 presentation made by Dan Gillean of Artefactual Systems at the Association of Canadian Archivists' 2016 Conference in Montreal, QC, Canada.
This presentation aims to examine several existing or emerging computing paradigms, with specific examples, to imagine how they might inform next-generation archival systems to support digital preservation, description, and access. Topics covered include:
- Distributed Version Control and git
- P2P architectures and the BitTorrent protocol
- Linked Open Data and RDF
- Blockchain technology

The “right to fork”, a consequence of the “hack on copyright” that is copyleft licensing, helps keep open source and open content project leaders honest. Forking is a political act as much as a version control command, and it used to be that both were a big deal. But now that distributed version control systems (DVCS) have made forking trivial, are there implications for the political act as well? How does political forking work within collaborative prose text projects (i.e. wikis)? English Wikipedia is so large as to be practically unforkable - it essentially has an unassailable monopoly, and unchecked power, in the English language encyclopedia market. One of the core Wikipedia rules is “one topic, one article”, which would seem to prohibit forking, but could we adhere to this principle and still take advantage of DVCS? Can a community be forked while keeping the shared project goals intact?
Audience members will benefit from a grasp of version control, distributed version control and the workings of wikis and Wikipedia.

When thinking of modern attacks, the web browser is still one of the top delivery vehicles. Whether it’s displaying an email or facilitating a link-redirection or merely serving a web page, browsers aid in the attack process. Despite their popularity, many companies focus their efforts defending the operating system, inspecting the network or attempting to keep up with threats through delivered feeds.
In order for any tool to gain adoption, it not only has to be useful, but also needs to easily fit into a user’s workflow. Using native browser interfaces, we’ve created a set of open source browser extensions that not only detect malicious activity, but block it entirely. More importantly, this functionality is delivered in a one-click package and doesn’t require any technical knowledge in order to successfully function. Users are able to take advantage of hosted repositories of data or run their own data node and updates are automatic.
This presentation will introduce the browser extension details, highlight how they function and inform users how they could take advantage of this functionality in their organization. No security solution is perfect, but bringing blocking capabilities to the browser without requiring any user change guarantees even the least technical of users can be protected. Originally developed with non-profit and smaller businesses in mind, these security browser extensions can bring peace of mind to any size organization, free of charge.

Open source has not just changed the way we think about creating and selling products—it has also changed the way we teach people to use those products. Smart companies no longer keep technical content under lock and key. Rather, they freely distribute information with the goal of making as many people successful with their products as possible. In this webinar, we'll look at strategies for creating and managing technical content to support open source products, including:
The advantages of open content
The content release cycle
Tools and platforms for content distribution

Archiving for Now and Later - workshop at Common Field Convening 2019Anna Perricci
Session description:
In this workshop, we’ll discuss the ways that thinking about the future of an initiative (and even its proposed end) can inform the decisions one makes in the present. Part organizational assessment and part introduction to web archiving, the session will look at how consideration for archiving one’s digital and physical assets can become an integral part of creative planning and day-to-day administration. The workshop begins with an introduction by Cameron Shaw, Executive Director and Founding Editor of Pelican Bomb in New Orleans. Shaw will discuss Pelican Bomb’s decision to sunset after 8 years of operation and also present tools for organizational self-evaluation. Following Shaw’s introduction, Anna Perricci, Webrecorder’s Associate Director of Strategic Partnerships at Rhizome in New York, gives an introduction to fundamental concepts in web archiving and a hands-on demonstration for using Webrecorder, a free, easy-to-use, web archiving tool.

How do you get 40 diverse libraries to agree on a model for shared print retention in 8 weeks? This lively overview demonstrates the process of forming and refining such a model for retention of monographs, using collection analysis and visualization software (GreenGlass). The Eastern Academic Scholars' Trust (EAST) is a partnership of 48 academic libraries, 40 of which are committing to retain titles on behalf of all EAST members for a minimum of 15 years. EAST seeks to maintain access to the scholarly record through sustained cooperation between partner libraries.
Hear how the project team worked with partner libraries, the vendor for collection analysis software (Sustainable Collection Services), working group members and EAST governance to refine and adopt a model for retaining over 6 million scholarly monographs. The key elements of the final model are covered as well major lessons learned.

Poster: Assessment of the Effectiveness of the Human Rights Web Archive @ Columbia University (plus some information about web archiving collaborations)
http://hrwa.cul.columbia.edu/
Web archiving encompasses several challenges that we face in the midst of the radical changes that are the focus of the ACRL-NY 2013 Symposium. Like many other interdisciplinary, wide-ranging and highly networked fields, human rights scholarship relies extensively on web-based information, but much of this content is at risk of disappearing within a relatively short time.
To meet the needs of the scholarly community, the Human Rights Web Archive @ Columbia University (HRWA) was created. The HRWA is a searchable collection of archived copies of human rights websites created by non-governmental organizations, national human rights institutions, tribunals and individuals.
In this poster we will detail our early progress in the assessment of the effectiveness of the HRWA through user testing and a review of scholarly publishing in journals focusing on human rights research. We will also discuss how keeping users actively engaged is at the core of our evolving collecting policy for web archives. In sharing our experiences with a collection development policy centered in an active and agile feedback loop, we hope to shed light on strengths and opportunities for growth including via collaborative initiatives.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

with generous support from
Webrecorder Project
● Easy to use, robust tools
● Free to use
● Fully open source
● Using open standards
● Growing user community
● Quickly evolving
5. High fidelity web archiving
● Fidelity = similarity between original and capture
● Capture any web page loaded in the browser
● Archive interactive content (only available after
user input)
● Same system for capture & browsing (web
browser)
6. Webrecorder creates high fidelity web
archives including
elements that crawler based systems
often fail to capture
such as interactive content
7. Collecting at human scale
• Collecting is done with intent by a person via web
browser one page at a time
• Can import and augment collections created by
crawlers
• Anyone can use Webrecorder: web archiving for
all!
The payoff for careful capture is an
accurate representation of the original
8. ● Being mindful and observant while collecting is
necessary and respectful (regardless of tool)
● Hand collecting can facilitate thoughtful acquisition &
require one to be more aware of what is being
gathered
● Crawler/machine based collecting is done via a
software that is made with human influence
○ Any claim of neutrality because automated tools
are used rings false (biases via algorithms)
Thoughts on human scale collecting
9. Your data
● Web archiving is more than just capture – it is about
description, stewardship and sharing, too
● You can save in free account &/or take your data out
of Webrecorder for storage (local &/or repository!)
● Downloaded WARCs accessible with free software
(Webrecorder Player)
● Collections can be shared or kept private
10. What about social media?
● Webrecorder can capture content from social
media sites (e.g. Instagram and Twitter)
● Some websites deliver content individualized for
each user
● Webrecorder can capture the content you see
when you are logged in to a social media profile
11. Login credentials
● Webrecorder.io is designed to not capture or retain
your login credentials (i.e. social media)
● But a non-personal account is not a bad idea since
there’s a possibility credentials could be written into
a WARC file if Webrecorder is not successful in
suspending capture during log in
● Under no circumstances is your log in exposed via
Webrecorder.io or discoverable
12. Human scale collecting
(one page at a time)
with no barrier to entry
(via Webrecorder.io)
levels the playing field
13. Bound archive & symmetrical web archiving
● Bound archive collection with firm boundaries,
With web archiving users can often quickly find
boundaries via browsing
● Symmetrical web archiving same user facing
software for collecting and access (a web
browser)
14. Sustainability
● More tools to come though some will not be free
● Subscription for more storage – Q1 2019
● Automated collecting & QA tools – Q3 2019
● Support to be better staffed but good design &
remote meetings/presentations are helping a lot
● Income: subscriptions, grants, grant subawards (i.e.
preservation tool for web projects), funded
collaborations & custom work, priority support
15. Collaboration & partnerships in action
● User partnerships with new web archiving
projects (Carnegie Hall, Stanford UP, Pelican
Bomb) and leaders in the field
● Development work (British Library, Perma.cc)
● Collaborative development (NFB)
● Increased usage from journalists & professors

18. Will we mirror or amplify the web’s problems?
● Let’s try not to
● Trauma or re-traumatization possible through
collecting
● Opportunity to highlight voices that are not
privileged by for profit or institutional entities
● Decolonizing web archives
