3. Why FOSS? FOSS
Why FOSS?
Every day, we use a variety of applications
without even wondering about their origins.
Our main goal is to complete the task at
hand, as long as these needs are satisfied we
remain loyal to the particular software.
But users like me and You need change over
a period of time. So developers of the
softwares work hard for that.
This is due to highly competitive software
market.
What if you need not pay money to buy a
software or use a pirated one?
Open Source softwares will do that for
you.
5. Why FOSS? FOSS
What is FOSS?
Free and Open Source Software.
Free/Libre/Open-source software (FLOSS) is software that is
both free software and open source.
It is liberally licensed to grant users the
right to use, copy, study, change, and
improve its design through the availability
of its source code.
Free refers to the freedom to copy and re-use the software,
rather than to the price of the software.
”Think of free as in free speech, not as in free food”.
6. Why FOSS? FOSS
Open Source Software
Open Source Softwares can be even better than their
commercial varients in some cases.
This all starts with any individual designing a first version of a
software and he puts it for testing, debuging and reviews by
others.
Over a period of time the application keeps improving.
7. Why FOSS? FOSS
A bit of History..
In the 1950s-60s-70s, it was normal to provide free software.
1960s change was inevitable: the reason, a growing software
industry.
Software Players did not want the costs of ”free” software
bundled with hardware product costs. Hence, Software was
also sold.
In 1983, Richard Stallman,
announced the GNU project later the
Free Software Foundation (FSF) was
founded in October 1985. This
formed the base for the freedoms of
the software users.
