Introduction  Bio Medical waste includes all the waste generated from the Health Care Facility which can have any adverse effect to the health of a person or to the environment in general if not disposed properly. All such waste which can adversely harm the environment or health of a person is considered as infectious and such waste has to be managed as per BMWM Rules, 2016.  In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6, 8 and 25 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 (29 of 1986), and in supersession of the Bio-Medical Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 1998, the Central Government hereby makes the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules follows, namely:-  The Bio Medical Waste Management Rules 2016  The Bio Medical Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2018  The Bio Medical Waste Management (Amendment) Rules 2019
  3. 3. Meaning of BMW  Bio-medical waste means any waste, which is generated during the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or animals or research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biological or in health camps

Red polythene bag  Disposable contaminated waste which can be recyclable – will be disposed by autoclaving treatment followed by shredding, Tubing, Bottles, Intravenous tubes and sets, Catheters, Urine bags, Syringes (without needles and fixed needle syringes), Vaccutainers with their needles cut and gloves
  7. 7. Yellow polythene bag  Human anatomical wastes, Body parts / tissues etc., Cotton dressings, Plaster, Casts, Gauze pieces, Antibiotics and other drugs, Microbiology waste, Culture devices, Stocks or specimen, Microorganisms, Discarded linens, mattresses, dressings soiled with blood or body fluids, routine masks and gown
  8. 8. Blue puncture proof container  Blue Puncture proof or leak proof Container  Glassware – broken, Contaminated glass, Medicine Vials, Ampoules etc.
  9. 9. White Puncture Proof Container  White (Translucent) – Waste sharps including metals – packed in puncture proof containers, Needles, Syringes with fixed needles, Scalpels, Blades, Lancet, Suture needle, Aluminum foil, Any contaminated sharp object causing puncture/cuts, Handed over to Waste Agency, when 2/3 full
  10. 10. Chemical/Liquid Waste  Liquid waste: To be treated with 1 to 2 % Hypochlorite or to have an ETP, Floor washing etc should be pre- treated onsite using 1 - 2% Sodium Hypochlorite or connected to ETP

HOME MASSAGE  Always use 1 percentage sodium hypochlorite disinfectant polythene  The polythene must have BMW based hazards symbols  The information of waste must be mentioned upon the polythene in details  The health worker should be a all the safety measures  While handling BMW  The waste should fill ¾, it could not over filled in working area  BMW dustbin must place in easy access of ward & critical area.  BMW must transport in separate pathway followed by disinfect area .  The transportation trolly must closed
