2. Who is Hugh Evans?
Hugh Evans is an australian humanitarian who co-founded
the both the Oaktree Foundation and The Global Poverty
Project.He was born in Kew,Melbourne and at a tender age
of 12,he joined the World Vision’s 40-hour Famine due to
concerns about poverty in developing
countries.Subsequently,he won a World Vision sponsored
contest and and was given a chance to visit development
programs in a developing country,the Philippines.
3. Then,he went on exchange to Woodstock School in
India and realised much about the poverty problems
India were facing.In one of his recounts,he stated that
the people of India asked for much less than what the
Australians like him did,even though they weren’t
even able to recieve it.At that point,he was motivated
to make a change,but still did not do so.However,the
time came when he visited rural areas in South Africa
and volunteerd for World Vision.That eventually led to
him returning to Melbourne and that was when he
started making social change.
4. How did the Global poverty
Project begin?
The Global Poverty Project was inspired by Al Gore’s film
“An Inconvenient Truth”.It is a community education group
established in 2008 by Hugh Evans and Simon Moss.Its
aim is to increase awareness and action towards fighting
extreme poverty in developing countries.It was given a
US$60,000 grant by the United Nations and a A$350,000
grant from AusAID,which was the agency responsible for
managing Australia’s overseas aid program until recently
when it was integrated into the Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade..
5. What did the Global Poverty
Project do?
Part of Hugh Evans activism in The Global Poverty Project
is the “Make Poverty History” campaigns and concerts in
Australia.Also,The Global Poverty Project have had many
other campaigns such as “Live Below the Line”,”The End of
Polio” and “Global Citizen” which all have a common goal
of encouraging the public to assist them in helping those in
need.
