4. eBooks
Reports from the
International Digital
Publishing Forum show
eBook unit sales
growing at a rate of
40%-60% in the period
2002-2003, compared to
an annual growth rate of
around 5% in traditional
print publishing).
7. The Saltire Centre
Glasgow Caledonian University
It combines elements that would normally be
found in the library, ICT centre, student services
centre and students' union. The spaces have
been designed to encourage different learning
styles and merge social and learning space in a
very effective way. Even the coloured dynamic
lighting changes through the day and the week
to reflect different moods. The Saltire Centre has
become the aspirational learning space at the
heart of the campus.
8. Million Book Project
Computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon University embarked
on a project to digitize the published works and make them
freely available online. They have surpassed their target, more
than 1.5 million books - many of them in Chinese.
The work has been carried out by workers at centers in India
and China, helped by $3.5 million in funding from the National
Science Foundation and contributions from computer hardware
and software makers. The US, China, and India each have
contributed $10 million in cash and contributions to the project,
undertaken with partners at China's Zhejiang University, India's
Indian Institute of Science, and Egypt's Library at Alexandria.
9. Sony Reader
The Sony PRS-500 Reader is an e-book reader that uses an electronic paper display developed by E Ink
Corporation, that has 166 dpi resolution, four levels of grayscale, is viewable in direct sunlight, requires no power to
maintain the image, and is usable in portrait or landscape orientation.
The reader uses an iTunes Store-like interface to purchase books from Sony's Connect eBook store. It also can
display Adobe PDFs, personal documents, blogs, RSS newsfeeds, JPEGs, and Sony's proprietary BBeB
(quot;BroadBand eBookquot;) format.
The Reader can play unencrypted MP3 and AAC audio files. Unlike its close cousin, the LIBRIé, the Sony Reader
offers no way for the user to annotate a digital book due to lack of a keyboard.
10. Amazon Kindle
Amazon Kindle is a wireless, portable reading device
with instant access to more than 130.000 books, blogs,
newspapers and magazines. It uses an electronic paper
display, reads the proprietary Kindle (AZW) format, and
downloads content over Amazon Whispernet, which
uses the Sprint EVDO network. The Kindle can be used
stand alone without a computer. Whispernet is
accessible through Kindle without any fee. Amazon does
not sell the Kindle outside the United States as
Whispernet only works in the U.S. On the release day,
the Kindle Store had more than 88,000 digital titles
available for download, but that number has steadily
increased. Amazon's first offering of the Kindle sold out
in five and a half hours and the device remained out of
stock until late April 2008. At launch, the device retailed
for $399; Amazon subsequently lowered the price to
$359.
