Rizal In London
• Rizal lived in London from May, 1888 to March, 1889.
• He chose this English City for three reason:
-to improve his English Language
-to study annotate of Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas.
-London was safe to carry his fight against Spanish tyranny.
• Completed annotating Morgan’s book.
• Wrote many articles for La Solidaridad
• Wrote famous letter for the young women of Malolos.
• Romance to Gertrude Beckett.
Trip Across the Atlantic
• Voyage of Rizal from New York to Liverpool
• He won many friends of different nationalities
• Entertained American and European with a yo-yo
• On board meet American newspapermen
• My 24, 1888- arrived in Liverpool, England
Life In London
• May 25 1888- Rizal went to London
• Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor- practising lawyer in
London; were Rizal stayed as guest at his home.
• No. 37 Chalcot Crescent, Primrose Hill- boarding
place where Rizal was boarder of Beckett family.
• Gertrude “Gettie or Tottie” Beckett- eldest daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Beckett.
• Beckett place was convenient to Rizal
• Dr. Reinhold Rost- librarian of ministry of Foreign
Affairs.
• A Pearl of Man (una perla de hombre)- Mr. Rost
called to Rizal.
• Rizal spent much time in the British Museum
• Rizal spent Sundays in the house of Dr. Rost for
discussion about linguistic and play cricket and
boxed with Dr. Rost son.

News From Home, Good or Bad
• Both Good and Bad reached Rizal, bad news were the injustice
committed by Spanish authorities to the Filipino people and Rizal’s
Family, those are:
-Persecution of Filipino patriots
-Persecution of Calamba Tenants
-Manuel T. Hidalgo was exciled
-Laureano Viado was arrested and jailed in Bilibid Prison
• One good news was the defense of Rev. Vicente Garcia to the Noli
against the friars.
Annotating Morgan’s Book
• Greatest achievement of Rizal in London is annotating
Morgan’s Book
• Rizal spent many days in the reading room of the British
Museum reading old histories of the Philippines written
by Fr. Chirino, Fr. Colin, Fr. Argensola, Fr. Plasencia and
etc.
• Dr. Morgan work is the best
• Sept. 17, 1888- Rizal sent a letter to Blumentritt saying
Morgan’s work is an excellent and praised it.
• For about 10 months Rizal was deeply immersed in
his study
• Mariano Ponce- Rizal never met who lived in
Barcellona , urged him to edit a newspaper which
would depend Filipino.
• October 12, 1888- Rizal refused Ponce and wrote to
Ponce that he is so very busy in studying.
Short Visit to Paris and Spain
• Sept. 1888 Rizal visited Paris for a week, in order to
search for more historical materials in Elbliotheque
Nationale.
• He was entertained by Juan Luna and his wife Paz Pardo
de Tavera.
• Dec. 11, 1888- he went to Spain visiting Madrid and
Barcelona to surveyed political situation in the
Philippine.
• He met Del Pilar and Ponce for the first time
Christmas in London 1888
• Rizal returned in London and spend Christmas and New
Year with the Beckett
• Rizal sent a gift to Blumentritt and Dr. Carlos Czepelak
(Polish scholar) a bust of Emperor Augustus for
Blunmetritt and bust of Julius Caesar for Dr. Czepelak.
• Rizal received a books entitled The life and Adventures of
Valentin Vox and the Ventriloquist from Mrs. Beckett.
Rizal Becomes the Leader of Filipino in
Europe
• Rizal learned that the Filipinos in Barcelona were
palnning to establish patriotic society which is Asociacion
La Solidaridad (Soladaridad Association) was inagurated
on Dec. 31,1888.
• Officers:
-Galicano Apacible as the President; Graciano Lopez Jaena
vice-president; Manuel Santa Maria secretary; Mariano
Ponce treasurer; and Jose Ma. Panganiban accountant.
• Jan. 28,1889- wrote a letter to La Solidaridad express
his thanks for the honor of making him President
and giving some advice:
-No one should resent defeat, when opinion was
rejected instead despairing wait for another shot and
give way to the welfare of society.
-No member should expect reward or honor
Rizal and the La Solidaridad Newspaper
• Feb. 15, 1889 – Graciano Lopez Jaena founded the patriotic
newspaper called La Solidaridad in Barcelona.
• Its aim were as follow:
1.to work peacefully for political and social reforms;
2.to portray the deplorable condition of the Philippines so that
Spain make remedy for them;
3. to opposed evil forces of reaction and medievalism;
4.to advocate liberal ideas and progress;
5.and to champion the legitimate freedom of Filipino People.
• Two days after birth of La Solidaridad M. H. Del Pilar
wrote to Rizal in London to see how editor Graciano
write, correct the proofs and organized the printing
of La Solidaridad.
• Rizal congratulate Graciano Lopez Jaena and advice
him to be careful and not to publish exaggerations or
lies or imitate others.
First Article in La Solidaridad
• Los Agricultores (The Filipino Farmers)- first article of
La Solidaridad was published on March 29, 1889
shown the deplorable condition of Filipino Farmer.
-Filipinos take away for personal service
-injustice take away of some properties
-dissatisfied or suspicious the farmers
Writings in London
• Rizal received news on Fray Rodriguez unabated attack
on his Noli
• In defense he wrote a pamphlet entittled La Vision del
Fray Rodriguez(The Vision of Fray Rodriguez) was
published in Barcelona un der his pen name Dimas Alang.
• Feb. 22, 1889- Rizal wrote “Letter to the Young Woman
of Malolos”
• The main point of this letter are:
-a Filipino mother should teach her chioldren to love God, Fatherland and
mankind
-the Filipino mother should be glad like the Spartan mother to offer her son in
the defense of fatherland.
-a Filipino woman shopuld know how to pursue her dignity and honor
-Filipino woman should educate herself
-Faith is not merely reciting long prayers or wearing religious clothes, instead
it is a living as a Christian way with good manners and good morals.
• Dr. Rost editor of Trubner’s Record a jornal devoted
to Asian srudies, requested Rizal to contribute some
articles.
• Specimens of Tagal folklore – publishe at May, 1889
• Two Eastern Fables- published in June 1889
• The first article consist of Filipino Proverb and
Puzzles.
• Proverbial Sayings:
-malakas ang bulong sa sigaw
-ang laki sa layaw karaniwa’y hubad
-hampas ng magulang ay nakaktaba
-ibang hari ibang ugali
-Nagpuputol ang kapos, ang lapis ay nagdurugtong
-ang nagsasabi ng tapos ay kinakapos
-nangangako habang napapako
-Ang naglalakad ng marakan, matinik ma’y mababaw
-ang maniwala sa sabi’y walang bait sa sarili
-ang may sinuksok sa ding ding ay may titingalain
-walang mahirap na gisingin na paris nang nagtutulugtulugan
-hipong tulog ay nadadala ng anod
• Puzzles:
-isang butil ng palay sikip sa buong bahay
-matapang ako sa dalawa, duwag ako sa isa
-dala ako nya, dala ko siya.
- Isang balong malalim puno ng patalim
Romance with Gertrude Beckett
• Rizal had a romantic interlude with Gertrude a girl
with a brown hair, blue eyes and rosy cheeks.
• Gertrude fall in love with Rizal
• Rizal called Gertrude “Gettie” and Gertrude called
Rizal “Pettie”
• Rizal suddenly realized he could not marry Gettie for
he had a mission to fulfill
In order Gettie forget him Rizal go away
• Before leaving in London he finished four sculpture
work;
1. Prometheus Bond
2. The Triumph Of Death over Life
3. The Triumph of Science Over Death
4. Heads of Beckett sisters
• Triumph of death over life and Triump of Science
over Death was sent to Blumentritt it Leitmeritz.
Adios, London
• March 19, 1889- Rizal bade goodbye to the Beckett
family particularly Gertrude and left London Paris .

  • 2. • Rizal lived in London from May, 1888 to March, 1889. • He chose this English City for three reason: -to improve his English Language -to study annotate of Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas. -London was safe to carry his fight against Spanish tyranny. • Completed annotating Morgan’s book. • Wrote many articles for La Solidaridad • Wrote famous letter for the young women of Malolos. • Romance to Gertrude Beckett.
  • 3. Trip Across the Atlantic • Voyage of Rizal from New York to Liverpool • He won many friends of different nationalities • Entertained American and European with a yo-yo • On board meet American newspapermen • My 24, 1888- arrived in Liverpool, England
  • 4. Life In London • May 25 1888- Rizal went to London • Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor- practising lawyer in London; were Rizal stayed as guest at his home. • No. 37 Chalcot Crescent, Primrose Hill- boarding place where Rizal was boarder of Beckett family. • Gertrude “Gettie or Tottie” Beckett- eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Beckett.
  • 5. • Beckett place was convenient to Rizal • Dr. Reinhold Rost- librarian of ministry of Foreign Affairs. • A Pearl of Man (una perla de hombre)- Mr. Rost called to Rizal. • Rizal spent much time in the British Museum • Rizal spent Sundays in the house of Dr. Rost for discussion about linguistic and play cricket and boxed with Dr. Rost son.

News From Home, Good or Bad • Both Good and Bad reached Rizal, bad news were the injustice committed by Spanish authorities to the Filipino people and Rizal’s Family, those are: -Persecution of Filipino patriots -Persecution of Calamba Tenants -Manuel T. Hidalgo was exciled -Laureano Viado was arrested and jailed in Bilibid Prison • One good news was the defense of Rev. Vicente Garcia to the Noli against the friars.
  • 8. Annotating Morgan’s Book • Greatest achievement of Rizal in London is annotating Morgan’s Book • Rizal spent many days in the reading room of the British Museum reading old histories of the Philippines written by Fr. Chirino, Fr. Colin, Fr. Argensola, Fr. Plasencia and etc. • Dr. Morgan work is the best • Sept. 17, 1888- Rizal sent a letter to Blumentritt saying Morgan’s work is an excellent and praised it.
  • 9. • For about 10 months Rizal was deeply immersed in his study • Mariano Ponce- Rizal never met who lived in Barcellona , urged him to edit a newspaper which would depend Filipino. • October 12, 1888- Rizal refused Ponce and wrote to Ponce that he is so very busy in studying.
  • 10. Short Visit to Paris and Spain • Sept. 1888 Rizal visited Paris for a week, in order to search for more historical materials in Elbliotheque Nationale. • He was entertained by Juan Luna and his wife Paz Pardo de Tavera. • Dec. 11, 1888- he went to Spain visiting Madrid and Barcelona to surveyed political situation in the Philippine. • He met Del Pilar and Ponce for the first time
  • 11. Christmas in London 1888 • Rizal returned in London and spend Christmas and New Year with the Beckett • Rizal sent a gift to Blumentritt and Dr. Carlos Czepelak (Polish scholar) a bust of Emperor Augustus for Blunmetritt and bust of Julius Caesar for Dr. Czepelak. • Rizal received a books entitled The life and Adventures of Valentin Vox and the Ventriloquist from Mrs. Beckett.

Rizal Becomes the Leader of Filipino in Europe • Rizal learned that the Filipinos in Barcelona were palnning to establish patriotic society which is Asociacion La Solidaridad (Soladaridad Association) was inagurated on Dec. 31,1888. • Officers: -Galicano Apacible as the President; Graciano Lopez Jaena vice-president; Manuel Santa Maria secretary; Mariano Ponce treasurer; and Jose Ma. Panganiban accountant.
  • 13. • Jan. 28,1889- wrote a letter to La Solidaridad express his thanks for the honor of making him President and giving some advice: -No one should resent defeat, when opinion was rejected instead despairing wait for another shot and give way to the welfare of society. -No member should expect reward or honor
  • 14. Rizal and the La Solidaridad Newspaper • Feb. 15, 1889 – Graciano Lopez Jaena founded the patriotic newspaper called La Solidaridad in Barcelona. • Its aim were as follow: 1.to work peacefully for political and social reforms; 2.to portray the deplorable condition of the Philippines so that Spain make remedy for them; 3. to opposed evil forces of reaction and medievalism; 4.to advocate liberal ideas and progress; 5.and to champion the legitimate freedom of Filipino People.
  • 15. • Two days after birth of La Solidaridad M. H. Del Pilar wrote to Rizal in London to see how editor Graciano write, correct the proofs and organized the printing of La Solidaridad. • Rizal congratulate Graciano Lopez Jaena and advice him to be careful and not to publish exaggerations or lies or imitate others.
  • 16. First Article in La Solidaridad • Los Agricultores (The Filipino Farmers)- first article of La Solidaridad was published on March 29, 1889 shown the deplorable condition of Filipino Farmer. -Filipinos take away for personal service -injustice take away of some properties -dissatisfied or suspicious the farmers
  • 17. Writings in London • Rizal received news on Fray Rodriguez unabated attack on his Noli • In defense he wrote a pamphlet entittled La Vision del Fray Rodriguez(The Vision of Fray Rodriguez) was published in Barcelona un der his pen name Dimas Alang. • Feb. 22, 1889- Rizal wrote “Letter to the Young Woman of Malolos”
  • 18. • The main point of this letter are: -a Filipino mother should teach her chioldren to love God, Fatherland and mankind -the Filipino mother should be glad like the Spartan mother to offer her son in the defense of fatherland. -a Filipino woman shopuld know how to pursue her dignity and honor -Filipino woman should educate herself -Faith is not merely reciting long prayers or wearing religious clothes, instead it is a living as a Christian way with good manners and good morals.
  • 19. • Dr. Rost editor of Trubner’s Record a jornal devoted to Asian srudies, requested Rizal to contribute some articles. • Specimens of Tagal folklore – publishe at May, 1889 • Two Eastern Fables- published in June 1889 • The first article consist of Filipino Proverb and Puzzles.
  • 20. • Proverbial Sayings: -malakas ang bulong sa sigaw -ang laki sa layaw karaniwa’y hubad -hampas ng magulang ay nakaktaba -ibang hari ibang ugali -Nagpuputol ang kapos, ang lapis ay nagdurugtong -ang nagsasabi ng tapos ay kinakapos -nangangako habang napapako -Ang naglalakad ng marakan, matinik ma’y mababaw -ang maniwala sa sabi’y walang bait sa sarili -ang may sinuksok sa ding ding ay may titingalain -walang mahirap na gisingin na paris nang nagtutulugtulugan -hipong tulog ay nadadala ng anod
  • 21. • Puzzles: -isang butil ng palay sikip sa buong bahay -matapang ako sa dalawa, duwag ako sa isa -dala ako nya, dala ko siya. - Isang balong malalim puno ng patalim
  • 22. Romance with Gertrude Beckett • Rizal had a romantic interlude with Gertrude a girl with a brown hair, blue eyes and rosy cheeks. • Gertrude fall in love with Rizal • Rizal called Gertrude “Gettie” and Gertrude called Rizal “Pettie” • Rizal suddenly realized he could not marry Gettie for he had a mission to fulfill
  • 23. In order Gettie forget him Rizal go away • Before leaving in London he finished four sculpture work; 1. Prometheus Bond 2. The Triumph Of Death over Life 3. The Triumph of Science Over Death 4. Heads of Beckett sisters • Triumph of death over life and Triump of Science over Death was sent to Blumentritt it Leitmeritz.
  • 24. Adios, London • March 19, 1889- Rizal bade goodbye to the Beckett family particularly Gertrude and left London Paris .
