Hello, my name is Sean Saint and I am the founder and CEO of Companion Medical. Amy asked me to come give a product demo of a category that some of you may never have thought of. Today, I want to talk to you about Smart Insulin Pens and what they can do for patients and for the data lovers in this room. But before we talk about the what of smartpens, lets talk about the why.
Today we have basically two options for insulin delivery, pumps and then there are pens and syringes. Pumps obviously are fantastic, and for a lot of us they’re the best choice. They have varying basal rates, they have dose calculators, they have electronic logbooks and physician reports. But on the downside, I don’t think this is what we mean when we talk about wearable technologies, and of course they are quite expensive.
Now, pens and syringes on the other hand are very easy, and they’re also very cheap. But, they really don’t do much else. But somehow, they still have roughly 70% market share in the Type 1 space and virtually all of the type 2 space. They’re doing something right.
So we asked ourselves if we could combine many of the best features of pumps and pens. If we could harness powerful data features of a pump with the simplicity of a pen. So we took what appears to be a normal insulin pen….and made it talk to your cell phone. It does this with no additional steps from the user. There are no buttons, no switches, nothing to do you wouldn’t do with an ordinary pen. Data flows from the pen to the phone only, and not back the other way. We are not controlling the pen in any way, only tracking.
We’ve tried to make this pen work the way users should expect, simply.
The battery lasts a year, no recharging.
It stores a year of data.
If your phone and your pen are separated when you dose, it will be transferred when they come back in range, automatically.
And last, we all know we’re supposed to prime pens. Some of us do, some don’t. No problem, we know which is which, again, automatically. We’ll track both, but IOB and therapy summaries are based on therapy doses only.
So on the cell phone we can provide many features you’re familiar with from your pumps. First, a graphical depiction of recent doses, and an Insulin on Board display. A dose calculator of course because only about 30-40% of people can do simple dose calculations accurately. We know that access to a dose calculator is related to meaningful reductions in A1c. We offer missed meal bolus reminders, like a pump. We also offer therapy reporting for the healthcare provider; and temperature alerts if your insulin gets too hot or too cold.
So we started Companion for a very simple reason. We went out and looked at the diabetes ecosystem as it is today and we were amazed at some of the work that was happening, but there was a gap.
There are so many companies now focusing on cellphones as an enabling technology. You guys are sending this data to the cloud and to the various data aggregation platforms. Platforms like Dexcom, Glooko, Medtronic, Nightscout, Tidepool, and mySugr. From there the data will soon flow to payers, to pharmacies, and to EMRs.
You are taking data from the cell and creating amazing adaptive dose algorithms and titration algorithms. Companies like Bigfoot and type zero.
But, all of these platforms rely on electronic insulin data. Today, we only have this for pumps. So we chose to focus our time there. Creating data for the vast majority of people with diabetes who don’t use insulin pumps. And doing it in a way that is easy, the way it should be.
So what are we going to do with that data? I’m guessing the people in this room have some pretty good ideas.
