2. My magazine genre that I have chosen is aimed towards the youth sector with
14-18 year olds becoming the majority for the target audience. Furthermore,
my chosen audience is considered to have a lower class audience. This could
be due to the readers being young and therefore not earning a high amount
money as well as not having the correct social status because of age as the
majority of the youth sector are unvalued so fit low on the hierarchy. The
audience for my genre are probably attracted to this style of music as it could
be argued that it is very relatable for them as a lot of the music gives lower
class and youth connotations with social topics included that mimic the
audiences as well such as band lyrics talking about being disrespected or
something that may typically happen to a teenager. As a result of this it could
be said that the audience now are attracted to the indie rock genre even more
as music is seen as a motivator or an escape so a relatable topic should be
chosen for maximum impact.
3. My current audience are likely to be young white males and this is
could be because the majority of the icons within the genre and
industry are white males so it is more likely to inspire white males
to follow the bands and artists as again it is seen that teens look
for a relatable topic to follow. This “segregation” between class
divide creates the indie rock social group to be placed into the
lower class sector with a very low standing on the hierarchy. This
has also been happening because the media have used indie rock
music tracks to go over other things which also bring
connotations of either negativity or the lower class in general such
as in a film an indie rock track being played over the top of a
montage in which the law is being broken. As a result of this we
then come to subliminally see the genre as a lower class
stereotype and as this happens to a whole population now the
indie rock genre is associated with a lower class white male group
as the norm so it is unlikely to change now because it is so hard to
break the stereotypes within music.
4. For my magazine I have tried to be conventional and
represent this exact stereotype as it fits perfectly with the
aspect of links with extreme sports that I have chosen. In
order to complete this to maximum efficiency I have used
young teen white models who have the correct mise-en-
scene to optimise the depictions that are most
conventional. The mise-en-scene I used were a setting of a
very urban backdrop which includes icons such as graffiti
or concrete to give the correct connotations for the genre.
Also the models were wearing typical indie clothes which
are often scene worn by the band members or extreme
sport members as well to keep the 50/50 as prominent as
possible. In indie rock it is typical for the artists or band
members to be using very serious or blank facial
expressions so I ensured the models for my work followed
this with the correct positioning within the shot so it
created the most conventional pictures for my design.
5. I also represented the typical design through my editing of the
three pages. This meant I put the correct editing towards the
photos to give an almost retro feel and the correct colour scheme
to represent the youth and class such as the steel grey colour could
represent the unimportance of how the youth are viewed as the
colour is dull and gives few connotations. The TYPEFACE I chose
also represents both the genre and the chosen audience as the
curvature mixed with the jagged lines represents the flow of the
music and it is fairly informal just like the lower class audience of
indie rock.
6. The props I have chosen to use are a les Paul guitar and a skateboard and these are the ideal props
to represent my chosen magazine style with the indie and rock fusion and skate and music style so it
fits the genre perfectly. The lighting choices have a slightly darkened tint which has been chosen as
the audience would have a higher appeal to this style as the slightly hazed setting mirrors the lower
social class as it is darkened and grungy as opposed to classical music photos which are crisp and
clear to show the high class clean listeners who follow.
