KEEPING YOUR FITNESS PROMISE:
CHIROPRACTOR DR. TIM PLUMLEY OFFERS PAIN MANAGEMENT TIPS
FOR THOSE WITH NEW FITNESS GOALS
Unity Chiropractic and Rehabilitation Open House Set for Wednesday, Feb. 1, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
SOUTH ST. LOUIS (January 30, 2012) – January brings a flurry of determined people with resolutions to lose weight and
get healthy, but within the first few months the inevitable happens – exercising to get fit, they often injure themselves in
the process or quit because of pain.
“Early in the year, we typically see more muscle strains and overuse injuries as people are just getting into their exercise
routines," said Dr. Tim Plumley, who offers nutrition and exercise counseling and wellness planning at his south city
chiropractic office, Unity Chiropractic and Rehabilitation at 6006 Hampton Avenue. “People shouldn’t let pain stop them
from fulfilling their promise to get physically fit.”
Chiropractic care focuses on conservative treatment (without use of medication or surgery) to help with injuries to
muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Chiropractic techniques are great at healing injuries that occur from repetitive
strain from common exercise, such as running and lifting weights. With restoring range of motion, decreasing muscle
tension and spasms, chiropractic care helps people become more active.
Here are Dr. Plumley’s 5 tips to deal with exercise pain so you can keep your resolution to get fit this year:
1. Ease your way into exercise with a warm-up instead of static stretching. Move and get the blood flowing in the
area you are exercising. This will prevent pain because they muscles will be active beforehand.
2. Focus on good posture and breathing. Stand up straight, hold your shoulders back and take a deep breath for 10
seconds. This will help to relax the muscles in your spine.
3. Take a short walk within tolerance, several times per day. Movement will help loosen your back. “Your body is
meant to move. Get out and be active,” Plumley said.
4. Apply ice for 20 minutes following exercise. Don’t apply heat; it promotes inflammation/swelling.
5. Make sure you drink lots of water. This will help to hydrate the muscles and discs in the spine.
Dr. Plumley, a member of both the American Chiropractic Association and the Missouri State Chiropractic Association,
has completed the Internal Health Specialist program. He is accepting new patients and is available on Facebook and
Twitter, consulting and answering questions on wellness and health.
