Of course, a far better alternative at end-of-life is recycling. There are several factors to consider when trying to measure the beneficial impacts of recycling on the environmental impact of a package’s end-of-life life cycle stage. Glass is the only packaging material 100% recyclable. Its made with natural ingredients and can be recycled infinitely.
In addition to closed-loop recycling, materials like glass and aluminum can be repeatedly recycled without losing the integrity of the material over time, and throughout repeated recycling. This characteristic extends the usable lifetime of these materials.
Glass is the only package that can be reused in its original form, without requiring any additional manufacture or processing.
Each time a packaging material is reused it helps avoid the need to manufacture another bottle. Glass is the only packaging material that can be reused over and over – up to 30 times – while 30 uses of every other material requires additional manufacture and energy use. That’s a dramatic increase in carbon footprints for the same number of uses.
Now, going back to our iceberg, there is an even wider number of issues that should become a part of our dialogue when we talk about green packaging. These are factors that go far beyond the package life cycle and the carbon footprint. Some of these weightier issues include… PROCEED THROUGH THE NEXT 4 SLIDES IN RAPID PROGRESSION.
It’s clear to us at O-I that packaging sustainability’s re ach goes much deeper than the issue of weight. We hope that we have added a fresh and helpful perspective on the packaging weight issue. But let’s not forget that there are many other sustainability issues re verberating below the surface of the current packaging sustainability dialogue. And for that reason, we hope you will agree with us that… GO TO NEXT SLIDE

A GREENER GALÁPAGOS O-I’s partnership with a long-standing customer is helping maintain the famed flora and fauna in the Galápagos Islands, one of the world’s most important ecosystems. A joint recycling effort of O-I Ecuador and brewery Cervecería Nacional, a SABMiller subsidiary, solves a significant garbage accumulation problem on the islands. Since it launched in 2010, the program has generated more than 160 tonnes of recycled glass that O-I uses locally to produce new glass. The company has similar public-private partnerships in other locations worldwide and is studying how these recycling successes can more quickly move the company toward its sustainability goals.
Toxicity & Health – In its broadest and most genuine sense, sustainable packaging is about the impact packaging has on health – human health, animal health and the health of the planet Let’s take a closer look at this particular issue. NEXT SLIDE
Let’s take a closer look at this toxicity and health. NEXT SLIDE
Glass is impervious – It serves as a barrier to protect any external toxins from getting into the bottle to contaminate the contents, and it prevents any of the elements of the beverage from leaving the container. This barrier ultimately provides the highest level of preservation for the product.
