2. Early Advertising
• 1704 - Advertising began with newspaper
article’s, the fist one of these was published
in the Boston News-Letter looking for a
buyer for Oyster Bay, Long Island estate.
• 1873 - In New York the first convention of
advertising agents was held.
• 1906 - W.K. Kellogg places first
advertisement for Corn Flakes in six
newspapers and by 1915 is spending $1
million on advertising.
• 1920 – KDKA, Pittsburgh is the first radio
station in America, between 1923 and 1930
60% of American families acquired a radio
set.
• 1926 – TV was invented, and was first shown
to the British public.
3. 1930’s – 1950’s
• 1939 - NBC experiments with a telecast of TV's first
baseball game, Princeton vs. Columbia in America.

• 1941 – The first television advert was by NBC in America
leading into a baseball game between Brooklyn Dodgers
and the Philadelphia Phillies, for Bulova a watch and
jewelry company in America.
• 1950 – David Oglivy and Leo Burnett were behind the
adverts but also came on magazine covers. Their
theories heavily influenced advertising then and today.
• 1954 – In the UK the Television Act establishes
commercial television and sets up the Independent
Television Authority (ITA). Also in America CBS becomes
the largest advertising medium in the world, only two
years after it opened its Television City production
facilities in Hollywood.
• 1955 - The first television advert in the UK was screened
on ITV, for Gibbs SR toothpaste.
4. 1960’s – 1970’s
• 1963 – The Television Act gave the authority more powers
on advert content and timing in the UK.
• 1965 – The Television Act was amended in 1964 from the
1954 and 1963, this banned adverts for cigarettes in the UK.
• 1967 – BBC2 was the first channel to introduce colour
television, this was from Wimbledon.
• 1969 – BBC1 and ITV broadcast in colour. The first coloured
advert was also aired ATV which is the ITV for the Midlands,
this was for Bird’s Eye peas during Thunderbirds which was
also the first children’s show to be broadcasted.
• 1970’s – Adverts differed slightly from what the had been
previously, before they would tell the consumer why they
should use the product from this they changed the style to
invite the consumer to share the same lifestyles and values
of he characters in the advert.
• 1971 – Cigarette adverts were banned in America. WPP plc is
a British multinational advertising and public relations
company was founded.
5. 1980’s –and onwards
• 1980’s – Interactive adverts become used.
The first one was an advert for Mazda Cars.
• 1997 – E-commerce is invented.
• 2004 – Google goes public and is valued at
$23 billion.
• 2006 – Online advertising takes 11% of
media expenditure

• 1955 – ITV was introduced.
• 1964 – Introduction of high quality 625 line, in colour.
• 1982 – Channel 4 was introduced.
• 1989 – Sky was introduced.
• 1997 – Channel 5 was introduced.
