How, When and Where to Start Preparation for JEE?
Right after 10th grade exams, students aspiring for JEE Main and Advanced should start
preparing. While your 10th grade marks are really important, they ultimately become an
age proof only. For IIT JEE, you have to think beyond memorizing text book content. You
may be a topper or an average scorer at school, but what matters for JEE is that your
conceptual clarity needs to be good. JEE is not just for the extraordinarily talented or
intelligent students. It is for everyone who dreams to make it big. Stay motivated,
dedicated and patient during your preparation.
Syllabus for JEE is vast with not one single handbook for help. While you have been
competing with a batch of 200 students at school, JEE is about lakhs of students aiming for
a handful of seats. Plancess experts give you an insight to prepare for the upcoming JEE.
HOW TO START?
Let’s answer the “how” first!
 Be selective about your study material. Refer to right books, not too many books.
Don’t waste your time running behind various study materials.
 Chalk out a timetable and prepare your strategy. 6 months focused preparation is
absolutely fine to excel in this exam, provided that you are dedicated and sincere.
The final few months can be crucial. Focus on weaker subjects and revise the
stronger ones.
 Strengthen the key concepts that carry more points. Identify the right topics and
keep practicing. Prepare a detailed list of vital formulae in every single chapter.
 Prepare your daily/weekly challenges and targets, and achieve them.
 Solve previous year question papers.
 Rest well, sleep, and have a proper diet.
BOOKS TO USE
 Physics: HC Verma + NCERT and DC Pandey
 Physical Chemistry: NCERT, OP Tandon Additional Theory, RC Mukherjee
Advanced Problems
 Math’s: ML Agarwal + RD Sharma and TMH
 Organic Chemistry: NCERT and LG Wade
 Inorganic Chemistry: NCERT and JD Lee
WHEN TO PREPARE?
The ideal time to start preparing for JEE is at the start of 11th grade. Students are usually
fresh after a break from their boards and they are ready to learn more. Starting from 11th
grade ensures that workload is evenly distributed and 12th grade board exams do not
become overburdening. There’s obviously a massive transition from memorizing in 10th
grade to understanding concepts of the 11th grade and JEE. Let’s see why!
Basics of 10th grade are important for JEE. When in 11th grade, students have fresh minds
with adequate knowledge of their 10th grade science lessons like mechanics and algebra.
Memorizing lessons becomes easier with past experiences and there’s enough time to clarify
doubts and start feeling confident.
Practice is the key to success in JEE. When students start on time, they have enough scope
of revision and practice.
WHERE TO PREPARE?
Students have a choice between online and offline study sessions. There are different
coaching classes offering lessons for JEE Main and Advanced examination. No matter which
coaching class you opt for, self-study is important for getting the concepts right. There’s
little to memorize for JEE; it’s all about concepts and keys.
 Offline classes: The traditional method of learning remains the most favourite.
However, there are some downsides to it – for instance, students don’t get enough
time to prepare themselves. They are usually running from one class to another,
wasting time in traffic and travel, collecting notes, getting tired and having no time
to study. Nevertheless, some coaching classes conducted by experienced teachers
are really worth the effort.
 Online classes: With technology at its best today, online JEE coaching classes
are excellent for students who want to prepare at home and make the most of
limited time available. Besides, students can opt for online coaching along with
physical coaching. Online lessons use the most advanced study material to help
students achieve their goals.
