Show Support for NBAF
Recently, President Obama submitted his 2013 budget and did not include further funding for the
National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan, Kan.
NBAF has been fully vetted and passed every approval process necessary for construction to begin,
including recent design changes that will dramatically curb potential threats from the planned facility. The
official status update from the Department of Homeland Security confirms that they are committed to
building NBAF in Manhattan, Kan., and in the KC Animal Health Corridor.
It is important that companies within the KC Animal Health Corridor maintain regional solidarity and remain diligent in support of
building this new state-of-the-art NBAF.
The purpose of NBAF is perfectly aligned with the work already being done by the 220 companies and 20,000 people employed
in the animal health industry in the Kansas City region. The location in Manhattan, Kan., was chosen due to the proximity to the
Biosecurity Research Institute that is already conducting very similar high-containment research.
At the national level, the current facility in Plum Island is no longer ideal. The United States is the world’s largest agricultural exporter
– imagine if those products were compromised. Our nation deserves a state-of-the art lab to fully protect our agricultural assets.
For the KC region, the NBAF project is proof that our area is the center of the global animal health industry. NBAF represents an
asset that would bring significant value, credibility and talent to the KC Animal Health Corridor.
Please help us continue the message that NBAF needs to be built, and it needs to be built in the KC Animal Health Corridor.
Contact your local elected officials to encourage on-going support from their offices and share your thoughts using your own
communications channels.
