  1. Four core needs still exist; these needs are augmented by some of the facts of our workplaces: Use cases for social computing are strong; policy and architectural considerations keep many from fully leveraging external Web CommunitiesChanging workplace demographicsEvolving work styles and work arrangementsLead with user needs and user patterns; in many cases, user designed solutions (Oslo, composition toolkits, partner-developed workflow tools)Great reuse of application, leverage all aspects of a strong platform, solid agility.
  2. Governance must be tight in some organizations; example of Facebook being “banned” in so many companies; users go “underground” using Facebook on mobile devices. Many companies have very good reasons for doing this: fiscal, policy, security, etc. Example of government security issues with military theater of operations mash-up applications.

  4. PKS is a solution built on top of MOSS 2007, leveraging OOB features and also extending some of their own: tagging, ratings, commenting, and video uploading of any format. It can serve as a social networking and media based sharing platform – think of “youTube for the Enterprise”. Internally at MSFT, it is very popular with the sales org; they use it to share their best practices and tips with their colleagues – some of whom they have never met before. Podcasts are a low cost and easy way to share tacit knowledge – the sales folks use a simple handheld camera to create their podcasts; it definitely does not have to be done in a formal studio environment. For those employees who were unable to attend the conference or reside outside the Redmond main campus, this is a way for them to see and hear what Tony had to say and watch his presentation.
