The Golden Temple in India is considered holy by Sikhs because it houses the eternal Guru of Sikhism, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is moved daily from the Golden Temple to the Sri Akal Takhat Sahib in the evening and back in the morning. The Golden Temple is culturally the most significant place of worship for Sikhs and one of the oldest Sikh temples, located in Amritsar. It was renovated and its golden exterior was added under the patronage of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the leader of the Sikh Empire.
