Knowledge needs a context in order to exist. The SECI model uses the term
“ba” to describe the place or habitat where knowledge is created, shared and
utilized. This place is where individuals can interact to recreate and amplify
knowledge.

create an environment where tacit knowledge can flow between individuals.

Socialization is the process of bringing together tacit knowledge through shared
experiences.
..the key to acquiring tacit knowledge
is to share the same experience
through joint activities. Apprentices
learn their craft not through spoken
words or written textbooks but through
observation and imitation …and
through practice. A rich environment
and trust will allow tacit knowledge to
transcend individual boundaries.

Socialization: Originating ba is place were individuals sympathize or
empathize with others, removing barriers between the self and others. From
this “habitat” emerges care, love, trust, and commitment.

Externalization is the process of articulating tacit knowledge into explicit form.
In an explicit form knowledge becomes crystallized and shareable.
Externalization is key to create new, explicit
concepts from tacit knowledge. A sequential use
of metaphors, analogies, and models are the
keys to success. Meaning is discovered and
contradictions are harmonized into models that
bridge image and logic.
The Externalization process is key because it create new concepts from tacit
knowledge.

Externalization: Dialoguing ba is a place where individuals’ mental models and
skills are converted (through peer interaction) into common terms and skills are
converted into common terms and concepts.

concepts from tacit knowledge. A sequential use

Connecting
Combination is the process of connecting discrete elements of explicit
knowledge into a set of explicit form that is more complex and systematic than
any of the parts.
ComplexSystematicWorkable plansOperationalizedDisseminatedUsability
The key outcome of this process is “on the ground” workable action plans and
operationalized elements.
The three key sub-processes of
combination are: collecting and
combining knowledge; disseminating
among member; and editorially refining
the content for usability.

The Internalization process is when organization is learning by doing and
shares that knowledge throughout the organization. At this level knowledge
becomes a competitive advantage.
The organization actualizes concepts into actions and training programs that
embodies an understanding of the organization and the individuals operating
within it.
Two key dimension of Internalization is that
knowledge about concepts and strategies has
been embodied into actions and practices, and
that these actions can be embodied through
simulation or experimentation.

Internalization: Exercising ba is the place of active participation where patterns
of action and thinking are continually stressed. This is a place of shared
interaction of time and space where explicit knowledge is organizationally
internalized.
Two key dimension of Internalization is that
knowledge about concepts and strategies has
been embodied into actions and practices, and

The SECI model uses the term “ba” to describe the place or habitat where knowledge is created, shared and utilized. This place is where individuals can interact to recreate and amplify knowledge.

The outcome is to create an environment where tacit knowledge can flow between individuals. • Shared experience • High-quality physical • Joint activities • Apprenticeship • Informal meetings • Transcend boundaries Shared experienceHigh-quality physicalJoint activitiesApprenticeshipInformal meetingsTranscend boundaries Socialization is the process of bringing together tacit knowledge through shared experiences. ..the key to acquiring tacit knowledge is to share the same experience through joint activities. In an explicit form knowledge becomes crystallized and shareable. Externalization is key to create new, explicit concepts from tacit knowledge. A sequential use of metaphors, analogies, and models are the keys to success. Meaning is discovered and contradictions are harmonized into models that bridge image and logic. The Externalization process is key because it create new concepts from tacit knowledge.

At this level knowledge becomes a competitive advantage. The organization actualizes concepts into actions and training programs that embodies an understanding of the organization and the individuals operating within it. Two key dimension of Internalization is that knowledge about concepts and strategies has been embodied into actions and practices, and that these actions can be embodied through simulation or experimentation.

The model helps both the governed and the governing appreciate the parameters of the obligations and jurisdiction. Noun vs. Verb dialogue – examine historical example of governors Intrinsic vs. extrinsic Evolution of our scientific paradigms influenced our metaphoric applications: Stimulus – Response: led to attempt to increase performance through reinforcement, trade-rewards frameworks Humanistic Psychology: led to attempts of cooperative appreciative inquiry and sensitivity training Quantum theory discovered the “observed effect”: led to Participation in relationships where interaction among members contributes to the “field affect” Complexity Theory discovered emergence out of chaotic conditions. Evolution emerging out of the edge-of-chaos, Involution emerging out of the edge-of-order.
